Help in identifying a book
Discussion
I’m not sure if I dreamt it or actually read it as a child but the part I remember is about a man who would stare for hours at a candle which would ultimately enable him to see through objects. I seem to remember he used it to perform magic by looking through cards and ‘seeing’ what card it was to the amazement of onlookers.
Can’t remember anything else apart from a feeling it was based in late 19th century
Any ideas or did I dream it!

I remember that.. wasn’t there a story about a boy shooting a swan with an air rifle too?
One of Dahl’s books, maybe?
e: Yes! “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wonderful_Stor...

I know, i saw it too, it's an insane coincidence.
The memory of the part of the story pops into my head every few years and last week i decided to post on here.
Book has arrived and despite not having read since he got his iphone 6 months ago, he absolutely loves the story and even thanked me for giving the book to him!
Looking forward to reading it myself when i get it back!
