I wasn't necessarily in agreement with his politics but I listened to an interview with him, in his later years, way back about 20 years ago and was struck by how honest and straight talking he seemed.
Interested to read a book (or two) if anyone has any recommendations please

Have a look below. The author was my local MP in my youth, and was PPS to Benn.

Fantastic orator and one of the last politicians to recognise the importance of history.

"The Benn Diaries" are available in one volume, the definitive tome, surely!

When my mum was terminally ill in a London Hospital in the 1980s, he had the nursing staff move her, because he wanted a room with a better view.

We're all equal, but some are more equal than others.

I have his "Arguments for Socialism" collection of essays: it's hilarious.

My favourite bit is a skit about setting up some kind of worker's collective in a Glaswegian shipyard, which - even Benn admitted - was an utter failure. His conclusion is - somewhat surprisingly - that the whole scheme wasn't socialist enough.

Most of the rest of the book follows a similar theme.

I can't recommend it highly enough.
