Regardless of whether or not it is a good book, I'd take any review of any JRM book that is published in the Guardian with a pinch of salt.

Given that JRM isn't the sharpest tool in the box, and that he took a whole 300hrs to write the thing, I feel on pretty safe ground agreeing with The Guardian on this point..

David Cannadine's 'Victorious Century' is an excellent book about the UK in the 19th century, don't waste your money on JRM's effort
