Firstly, to be clear, this is NOT an advert, not even completely decided whether to actually sell the example below, but here goes.

Over the years we have got rid of or given away scores of books, possibly even hundreds, usually to charity shops or hospital league of friends.

However I have some which in my opinion would be wasted doing that. I need to figure out a value and where to list and then make some decisions.

My example book, Roger Clark, Sideways to Victory. I think it's a first edition, it certainly passes the abebooks criteria listed on their website. It's not new, or even mint condition, well read, book itself is definitely in good condition, but the dustcover is showing a little bit of wear on the edges. Much like this one advertised for £45 here

You can find them around the net listed at up to and over 300 pounds, and of course less.

However the difference with mine is it's a genuine signed copy from Roger himself, direct to me as first purchaser in 1976. There are no other signed copies listed anywhere that I can find.

So, where do I go from here? Again just to be clear, this is NOT an advert, but merely an example.

Advice and pointers welcome.

Somewhere like Pooks or Chaters may be interested, you can find them on line. There are few others that advertise in places like Motorsport or Autosport too.

Do you want to realise their actual value, or do you want a derisory offer?

If the former, get off your high horse and deal with Ebay. If the latter, contact a motoring bookshop.

Simples.

Why? It is clearly the best place to make the most money.

The money isn't an issue, they're not going to make big money.

For example one place I've looked at has a book signed by Jack Brabham at 75, one by Innes Ireland at 95, one by Rudolf Carraciola at 295 but suspect that one is a bit special. Anyway it's not about the money, ok?

But I don't feel like giving away to a charity shop who can bung it out for 50p, reckon that's not unreasonable.

But if the money were an issue, how does one pick a reasonable reserve price, and how is an eBay account with zero track record going to get maximum attention.

That's before you get into the supposed aggro of complaints, it arrived damaged, not as described even if not the case, and goodness knows how many other reasons for some ass to open a dispute which will seemingly end up with no book and no money.

If could find one would stick it in a local motor club charity auction for example as one thought, that's as opposed to selling it to the great unwashed.

Give an auction house like Silverstone Auctions or Coys a call, both will have auctions in the spring/summer and will want memorabilia lots to accompany the cars. You'll get a knowledgeable group of buyers and an auctioneer who will know the potential
