I’ve been promoted at work and will be in charge of around 30 engineers/technicians and a few office staff.

I was wondering if there are any audio/books anyone could recommend for someone on how to be an effective supervisor/manager, for someone who’s never had this sort of responsibility before?

Thanks in advance

My days of running a hierarchic team have now finished but I found one of the first key steps is to master the principles of Time Management.
There are numerous books on the subject but they all effectively suggest that management is simplified if you adopt the 4 'D's
Do - action now
Defer - deal with later if not important
Delegate - give to somebody else who is better able to deal with it
Dump - in the bin.

It made sense to me.

Do all 30 report directly to you?

That's a lot.

Yes they do.. it’s a bit of a shock to the system to be honest but so far so good!

It’s been a while since I’ve studied this kind of thing but as has been mentioned 30 is a very large number. Thoughts on this have changed over time but, depending on the role, 15 or so would be towards the top end of things.

You can pickup some useful info on the web on this by searching “span of control”.

Also it appears you will be managing technical and non- technical staff which will require different skills and knowledge which will pose additional challenges.

Good luck!

30 is a lot, put in some "focal" points for each group, area, product, etc; you cant be expected to keep track of 30 peoples workload in terms of knowing the detail, use as a filter for information flow (both ways).

good luck smile
