Got some 6 or 7 hours driving to do en route to Le Mans, all motorway for various reasons (just want to get there).
Bores the life out of me when I'm in the passenger seat - someone suggested audio books.
I've found a couple, don't know what the score is. Do they come as CDs or are they some file I have to download to a phone?

Subscribe to audible, you get one free book with a sign up:

https://www.audible.co.uk/

You then download the app and the book to get it on your phone / tablet.

I do quite a bit of driving on my own, usually a round trip of 5 hours every other week and took to audiobooks.

You can buy them as CDs but quite pricey. I ordered a Star Wars novel on CD and it turned on with 13 discs so that would explain the price. Alternatively I've downloaded quite a few through iTunes as they're usually sub £10. Currently listening to World War Z which I've read anyway but makes for a good listen. smile

If you can stream your phone in your car then you'll be good for hours with an audiobook. smile

Download the Radio Le Mans preview shows, they normally appear between the test day and the weekend before the race.

Normally they fill out enough time to get from Calais to LM, if not further.

So starting using audible a few months ago , never used audio books before but I've really enjoyed using it.

Here's the best value way of doing things:
-Sign up and get a free book
-Cancel towards the end and out reason as too expensive , get a free token to tempt you to stay.
-Let it renew one month (£7.99) + get a book token
-Cancel again reason too expensive
-Accept offer of £3.99 pm for 3 months.

Haven't got further yet lol.

So for 7.99 you can get 3 books that are yours to keep even if you cancel. Just make sure you use the tokens as you lose them otherwise.

I did the same on two accounts , read the Rama series by Arthur C Clarke and quite enjoyed them (sci fi) . A load of Ricky Gervais (Karl Pilkington) stuff free too (about 10hrs) will keep you occupied.

I have ready player one and 11.22.63 (the TV series was amazing) ready to try out next.

If you don't have BT audio in car, I'd recommend the Kinovo BTC450 on Amazon. Save plugging in the phone every time to your Aux

Thanks for all the replies. Guess the download option is the way forward - need to see if I can stream to my car - it's a 2007 XKR - didn't find a way to do it but didn't try very hard, I'll check it out on the internet and see what I can find.

Thanks for the suggestion about the Le Mans download, cracking idea, just what I'll want to listen to on the way down. It's the radio etc coverage that I enjoy most about the whole thing.

You probably won't have if it's that old, but this is the next best thing

Kinivo BTC455 Bluetooth Hands-Free Car Kit for Cars with Aux Input Jack (3.5 mm) - Supports aptX and Multi-point Connectivity https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00JK0G8KC/ref=cm_sw_r...

You plug this into our 3.5mm port (presuming you have one ) and power it. Connect to it via Bluetooth on your phone and you can then stream to it. So it's a wireless link to your ...wired set up. Works really well.

I don't have that option but thanks for the suggestion

You might find this helpful mate : https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Bluetooth-Car-Kit-W...

It's an FM transmitter, so you pair your phone to this via Bluetooth and then tune your radio in to the signal from it.

I use one in my 2003 E Class. The quality is more than sufficient for speaking, not perfect for music but does work. smile

Highly recommend audible. If you`re an Amazon customer, you should be able to get two free books when you first sign up.

Audible also has the guarantee that you will enjoy every audiobook. If you don't like one for whatever reason they will refund you a token within around 24 hours from when you let them know.

I find books told in the first person seem to work better as audiobooks

it all depends on the narrator to me rather than 1st/3rd person.

If the narrator is naff or over exaggerates voices it breaks any immersion. How some of them got jobs narrating big titles suprises me.

The newer bosch books are good as they are narrated by titus welliver from the tv show and suits it perfectly.
Autobiographys also for me need to be read by the subject with some exceptions.
