Best way to sell old car programmes/magazines/books ??
Discussion
Hi all, probably been asked before but what would be the best way to sell old (1950/1960's) race car programmes and car books, also a load of old Autosport magazines from the 60's , 70's ??
Have found that some of the same programmes sell on ebay for a fiver but my dad has got sh*t loads of them !! Trying to list them all Individually would take weeks !!
Car related jumble sale/boot fair ?
Sell them in bulk to a dealer ?
What do you think ?

I would think the best way would be to get a list together of what you have, with an idea of condition, and approach a few of the dealers to see what they'd offer you as a one-off. As you said, listing on eBay is quite time-consuming - there are tools you can use if you're intending it to be an ongoing business, but I'm not sure of the costs and complexity involved for a one-off sale. You could get yourself a stand at one of the shows like Race Retro, but a lot of the more common magazines are selling for a pound or less, so you might struggle to cover the cost.
eBay will offer the best return, but prices will be all over the place and you might end up with some that just won't sell.
A dealer will offer you pennies on the pound of the prices you could expect via eBay though. What's your time worth?
You could try some bulk offers (eg all the F1 programmes, all the programmes from one circuit, 50-55, 55-60, etc or whatever - I don't know what you have) - Would save time, but you might not get any takers.

Thanks for the response. Thinking I might try and sell them in small batches, be easier to sell on ebay. Can imagine at some motor show them going for a pound each !!Nice Droopsnoot by the way, use to have one myself many years ago !!

Yes, come to the realisation that it might be best all round to do the ebay thing and bulk sales someway.A dealer will offer you pennies on the pound of the prices you could expect via eBay though. What's your time worth?

Cheers - do you remember the reg and have any old photos? Always looking to expand the club register.I've done it a couple of times on ebay but how well you do is very dependant on the publications
The first time I did it I had a huge stack of Maxpower magazines and I sold them on ebay in bundles of 3 for £5 with postage on top and cleared probably 60 magazines over a month or so for a decent amount of money.
A few months later I tried it with a huge stack of speedway magazines (about 40 years worth of them) and I got no where apart from one reasonable size bundle to a collector in Poland.
It's hard work and it depends how much effort you want to put in, a dealer will pay you a fraction of their value but its a quick way to clear them.

Cheers, I remember now, and in fact still have those photos saved. I was looking for emails, but you posted those two here: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...Well I think old motor magazines are pretty much worthless unless you want to spend hours listing every single magazine, then maybe sell one in every twenty for a fiver. Offer them in bulk but pick up only is not going to sell them either.
Only thing I've had any luck on is selling motor racing programmes. Again only a fiver a time but sold 20 or so.
I was never doing it for the money just thought somebody must collect them/want them, and didn't want to throw them in recycling.
Looks like that's where old 60's Autocar, 50/60/70/80's Motor Sport and 80/90's Classic and Sportcar is heading though !!

I'm old enough to remember when there was a market for motoring magazines of a 'classic' period - but those days seem to have gone.
For instance, I have Autosport from the very first issue up to the late 1990s, unbound and with adverts complete. Because I could not find any Indexes, I also compiled my own sets of indexes too.
Yet last time I tried to move them on, without using a skip, I got absolutely nil response ....
