My daughter has started reading the Harry Potter books, and is on the 4th one. She has been watching the films after reading the books as well. We bought the DVD collection and I have noticed that the later films are rated 12. My wife think that the later books are also too scary and that she shouldn't read them.

Has anyone read them and can empathise from a 6yr old's point of view as to how scary they are? She did get a bit scared by the Prisoner of Azkaban and she thought Sirius Black had broken into our house.

Trying to encourage her to read something else but she is obsessed with them. Found her at 11:30PM after going to bed a 7 with her light on still reading the other night

I have a 6 year old girl too and I think she's too young for HP. I remember being amazed at how scary the first film was considering the certificate it had.
Impressive reading skills and concentration from your 6 year old anyway, mine reads well but I can't see her having the patience to wade through books the size of the HP ones.

If she starts from the beginning and reads as they were released she should be ok.

I would say that at 6 she will miss some of the darker references and get caught up with the plot.

There is a lot of death though!

Harry Potter is no darker than Disney stories and the Grimm Brothers tales they are based on.

If she is keen I don't recommend that you discourage her. I can't see that there is anything in there which is going to upset her. if she was fascinated by serial killers or something similarly sick, or just refused to read at all, you might have a problem.
