Legal thrillers

Connelly is much more gritty.
In what way? One of the things I like about Grisham is that the crime is almost incidental to the story and the sense of menace is generally implied rather than explicit.Grisham's books are 'legal' (or legal setting based, at least) thrillers rather than 'crime thrillers' (which I don't mind, but Grisham's are a bit different because of this).

I've read a lot of Stuart MacBride recently and very much enjoyed them, but they're crime (police) rather than legal thrillers. Off the top of my head I can't think of a British-based 'version' of the Grisham-style stuff though I will think some more. I did enjoy the TV series of 'Judge John Deed' but that's not really the same thing, either.
