Political Diaries

I'm currently reading Alastair Campbell's diaries. I thought I disliked him so expected not to enjoy his diaries as much as others I have read but they are fascinating. I'm also starting to understand him more and respect the job he did even though I disagree with his politics.

I am a self confessed political junkie and have read lots of diaries. Alan Clark's were the most fun, very indiscreet and salacious. Tony Benn's were very interesting and gave a good insight into the machinations of the Labour party in the 1960's - 80's. They also illustrated Benn's unwavering belief in his views, however barking mad they were and however much everyone else disagreed with him. Chris Mullin's are probably the best, very well written and insightful and fascinating if read chronologically to see how his political views softened from hard left to pretty centrist as the lyears passed. Ronald Reagan's were heavily edited and dull.

I haven't read Chips Channon as they were from a time long before I was born but I may get around to them. Anyone else know of any good ones?

I read Chips after Clark's numerous quotes in his own Diaries piqued my interest a few years ago. From what I recall it was well written and offers a privileged behind the scenes look into a bygone age. He was an astute political commentator, social climber and snob-extraordinaire. With great wealth, vanity and exceptional connections it's no surprise he could also be a terrible bh; no wonder Clark lionised him!

Currently reading Damian McBride 'Power Trip' and enjoying it far more than I expected. Not too far in, only around 90 pages so haven't read any sensational secrets nor chuckled through any candid character assassinations yet. He can certainly write copy and is sometimes suicidally revealing about his life. Looking forward to the rest.
