If I remember correctly it really starts getting brilliant from book 4 (wizard and glass). If your a King fan then you'll pick up on a lot of cross references to his other work.
So yes it's worth sticking with. You need to remember that the first 2 or 3 were written early in Kings career, which is reflected in the style.

Did not like it at all but I stuck through it until the end. Liked book one but it seemed to go downhill from then.
I think they're the sort of book you have to invest some thought into which is probably why I never 'got it'.
Much prefer King's regular works or good fantasy. I just felt, for me, this was nowhere near as good as either.
