My 9 year old son was recently given this:

Well done, Grandma! He's finally finished it and lent it to me. I used to love these in the 1970's, and possibly into the 80's. There are some excellent insults based on racial characteristics, but also a fair amount of what appears to be accurate detail. The stories are formulaic at best, but fantastic escapist fun. I'd forgotten how much fun they were to read. At the back of the collection are unfortunately B&W images of the covers - 5p or 6p each!

Does anyone else have fond memories of these?

Gott in Himmel! Englander Pigdog!
Them and most of the Marvel comics used to take up all my pocket money and more.

Now there's a blast from the past. Used to have dozens of these between me and my cousin. Think there was another similar one in the same format, 'War' or something like that?

Warlord?

There's a Commando Comic ipad app / android app (maybe) / website that you can buy them / subscribe to them now.

I couldn't really figure out how it works, not sure you can just pick and choose what ones you want - rather you just get a bunch each month.

Top nostalgia. I used to get the compendium annuals as a kid - how I wish I hadn't thrown them out.

Battle went down hiill a bit when they started doing sci go stuff in it. Used to love Johnny Red flying his Hiurricane in Russia and defeating ze Germans single handed

My brothers and I used to have stacks of Commando books back in the early/mid 70s... I bet middle bro still has a boxful stashed at our parents' place biggrin
Middle bro also used to collect Warlord whilst kid bro caused a stink when (aged about 7) he bought the first issue of some new rag called 2000AD... harvesting dinosaurs indeed whistle

Loved reading these as a kid in the 70's

I seem to remember the Brits always made manly noises ("AAAARRRRRGGH!") whilst the Japanese and Germans screamed like girls ("AIIIEEEEEEEE"")

Bullet was great and included Fireball, and the Fireball Club, which got you a dodgy plastic wallet and a 70's medallion!

It later merged into Warlord.

I used to subscribe to Victor. The amount of secret underground Nazi bases seemed to be unlimited.

I had a several of these little comics & they were swapped at school too.

My favourite quote: "Chew lead slant eyes!" shoot

I've got a big box of these in my parent's house dating back to about 1979 and they're in excellent condition. I must remember to bring them back the next time I'm over in Ireland smile.
