Dan Brown is one of the authors on my shortlist of "don't waste my money on these".

there was a "review" from a lady speed reader this morning on R2 - she read the book in 41 minutes.

most of the internet seem to be saying - high quality drivel. Brown seems to have fallen foul of his own opinion of his writing talents...

make your own mind up of course... what do you expect though?? Steinbeck?

having read Angels & Demons, then DaVinci Code, I was less than impressed. I was lent his third and I saw the pattern of bluff/counter bluff and misdirection, so I read the 4th with the aim of proving it, and apart from being dire, was as predictable as the sun coming up.

I hold no hope for this next one

Does this one involve a mysterious assassin? I bet it does, perhaps with some form of impairment?

It's the next on my to read list... I predict it will be intelligently written and entice me to keep reading but when I'm finished I won't know what the fuss is about?

I've made the plunge and got it stacked on my kindle, for when I eventually finish The Stand by SK which is enjoyable but very long and tedious at times.

Bought it on offer in Smiths last week for £7 I think. Ill read it when I go home again, as I do the rest of my reading on the Kindle. Im in no rush, but will read it due to the utter ste that was his Last Hope thingy or whatever it was last time. Which was complete cack.

Im not sure why people diss A&D and DvC though, they were excellent books with good storytelling. His other stuff is an equal mix of hit and miss.

I'll not argue that DB can't write "page turners" but after reading them I had the feeling that I had wasted my time.

Because he writes books for people who don't read books.

I read more than my fair share. He tells a good story when he gets it right. He writes some boring rubbish when he gets it wrong. C'est la vie.

Im 3/4 the way through the book and I am enjoying it. I read the davinci code and seen the film and I feel as if Tom Hanks/Robert Langdon is speaking his lines in my head!

Is this a good thing or bad thing?

He has an easy page turning style.
Granted they are not brilliantly written but if you just take them at face value rather than look to deeply, they are enjoyable.

Well I think so!

Reading his first book (first to me) Angels & Demons, it was an easy, okay read. Nothing spectacular but readable.

Then reading his other, up to and including The Losy Symbol, it seemed like picking up the first book and just changing the names and places. I found nothing new in his later releases and I doubt I will buy his latest book.

Why do people hate him? I thought it was a good ending to the book by the way. X

I've read all his books so far, but I don't think I'll worry about this one. That said, my current reading choice is rather suspect... paperbag

I thought it was an enjoyable evening's read.

There are a number of reasons people hate his writing, the primary one, in my opinion is his unsophisticated attempts to drive and direct the readers thinking. This works on simple minded folk and those who rarely pick up a book but for the rest of us, it's mildly insulting.

Having said that, we are talking about a cheap novel aimed at the masses. Having just finished Inferno, I enjoyed it and don't read books pretending I'm some literary critic.

I know lots of people who enjoyed his previous books and those same people are likely to enjoy this one.

It's an easy read, not demanding much concentration and has probably been launched deliberately to coincide with the holiday season, for which it is ideal.
