Anyone else a Manga (or even general comic) reader on here?
I dip in and out over the years but currently knee deep in Death Note and getting into it in a big way.
Not read very much Manga, but I've been collecting the 2000AD compendiums and reliving my childhood (stopped getting the comics around 84).I dip in and out over the years but currently knee deep in Death Note and getting into it in a big way.
Judge Dredd 1-10
Flesh
Strontium Dog 1-2
Nemesis the Warlock 1-3
Ro-Busters
ABC Warriors 1-4
Yet another necro - however, better to reuse and recycle a relevant thread then clutter up the sub-forum. Even if it is tumbleweeds here.
I've been slowly getting back into anime, and in the last year, more manga since idly rewatching Akira back in 2013 (originally 1990 or so) and finally realising what an amazing piece of anime it truly was, and still is.
I've transitioned from visual novels into anime, and now firmly into manga. The reason for my transition is because manga provides more breathing space to allow the narrative and characters to settle. Plus, the art style of the particular artist / author.
I'm a big fan of slice of life i.e. ordinary people in everyday situations, with a little soupçon of romance e.g. Matoko Shinkai's '5cm Per Second' and Inio Asano's wonderful 'Solanin' are favourites of mine.
Jumped into Naoko Urasawa's '20th Century Boys' Vol 1 (Perfect edition), which I thought might be a Boys Own type adventure and was greatly surprised in a good way that it is so much better, with excellent character building, an interesting plot, and mature themes balanced with humour.
I recently devoured Junji Ito's 'Uzumaki' - a horror manga, normally outside my comfort zone (a small coastal town is contaminated by a pattern), that is widely regarded as one of the best horror manga out there. Deeply unsettling in both atmosphere and art. A really intelligent horror.
Shonens like Berserk, One Piece, One Punch Man et al fail to ignite my interest.

For Slice of Life I would thoroughly recommended Yokohama Kaidashi Kik?.
It's a really beautiful story.
Apologies for the delay in responding. Busy, but good Easter. It's a really beautiful story.
I read a synopsis of your recommendation [Kikou] and have added it to my 'Want to Read' managa list on Anime Planet. I've taken a brief interlude away from Manga, back into Finance and have ordered 'Barbarians at the Gate: The Fall of RJR Nabisco'.
Once my brief soujourn away from Manga is over, I'll resume '20th Century Boys'.
I want to read a variety of genres (but not shonen - 'Berserk' is actually 'seinan'. I made an error in my previous post), with the exception of most shonen and gundam. I have zero interest in Mechs. For my seinan choice, I'm either going to plump for 'Vinland Saga' or 'Lone Wolf & Cub' over 'Berserk'. I also want to read a variety of different authors, otherwise I'll end up ransacking Inio Asano's works - there are around another 4 of his that I want to read.
I've never read any Manga, but as it happens was listening world of mouth podcast which mentioned it this evening

There's a reddit thread that provides recommendations based upon genres. It's a good place to start - in terms of identifying potential manga and reading reviews.I haven't read Death Note, but watched the anime. I'd liken it to a modern Crime & Punishment w/ a supernatural twist. The main two protagonists (Light & L) are excellent foils for each other, and the other cast members are well drawn, especially Light's father. Where it falls down is in the depiction of Light's girlfriend (one dimensional - unsure if character is better in manga), and 2/3rds of the way in, the narrative loses direction - if you decide to read, you'll know exactly when the narrative starts to fall flat.
I'd avoid One Piece and its ilk that have a million and one volumes. That's why Death Note is often recommended: complete series that can be picked up relatively inexpensively.
What genres interest you?
