Towing with a PHEV
Discussion
I currently have a diesel Sante Fe which copes admirably with towing out 1,750kg caravan. However only about 10% of my annual mileage is dome towing the caravan, and its a fairly thirsty car.
I am therefore considering changing it probably for something second hand, although the new deals on Ford Kugas are good. Issue with the Kuga is boot size. I need to get everyone in, and the camping kit, for Le Mans.
My vague thought is I should get a PHEV as then local mileage could be done on battery but whats available and any good?
So recommendations for a PHEV that can tow 1,750kg, costs around 25K and is not chinese.
Anyone have a PHEV to tow with? Whats it like.

530e touring BMW here
90+% driving on battery at home so cheap to run
Towing, with the battery full I was getting around 33mpg as it’s an adaptive use of the battery over the journey (if you use the nav) and that was over 300 miles. Got 27mpg with an empty battery as the next day we could not charge.
I am currently sitting in south east France after towing the van here. So if you can charge while away, it works. Well I know the BMW does, not up to speed with other brands

My neighbour has a big Kia that he tows with , a highbrid. He explained to me he was carrying the caravan and the then empty batteries after about 30 miles .
If he uses the battery up first, as some cars will default to - he will. If he switches into hybrid mode from the start the battery will deploy and regen to lighten the load on the ICE.I wouldn’t expect anyone with a Kia to be able to know the difference though.
I think one of your issues is weight, not many will tow almost 1800kg.
To pull that weight with a Kuga you will need the facelift model the preface lift is limited to something like 1400kg
There is a Facebook group for towing with kuga’s
Your other option is a Volvo t6/8 in either v60/90 or xc 60

Annual mileage is 10,000 about 1,000 of which is towing the caravan. About 7000 is probably longer journeys and 2000 local journeys.
I got my current Sante Fe 5 years ago on the basis it would be more fuel efficient. It isn't! However the paint is flaking off so I want it to go before more comes off!
The VW Tiguan could be an option, or a Volvo

We have a V90 t6 phev. Don t have a caravan but the wife tows her horsebox with it, which doesn t tend to be any more then 20 miles from home realistically. Maybe a few times a month it s used to tow.
It s charged as much as we can at home, I would say at least 75% of journeys are done on electric. I noted what the last tank of petrol lasted, it done 1000 miles combined with electric and that averaged 91mpg. Use the in built sat nav for longer journeys then the car will decide when to use ice/electric.
I m trying to convince her all electric is way to go for next car.

I can't help with the PHEV but my 2018 Santa Fe is idea and Tow my caravan. Adria Mississippi which for a single axle is still 27ft long and 8+ wide. My Santa Fe given me 40+mpg but around 30 towing. added 50k to it in 8 years, was less than a year old when I bought it. And a future replacement will cost me 40K plus so keeping with it for now.
I've looked at replacements but the new Santa Fe is fugly and from 65k. My less than a year old car was 25k. The new one can to 1100kg so useless for my needs. And other choices are bloody expensive. Why saying I will stay with what I have. So changing won't always give you a better option. Just saying.

Newer Passat with the 1.5l and 19.7kwh battery will tow 1800kg. Meant to do 50-60 real world miles to a charge (when not towing), and the VWs can properly run as a short range electric car, no engine needed to get heating as some do. Nearly new ones are comfortably under £25k.
They all tend to default to using electric only at first but for towing you want it to retain a decent buffer of charge when you need it, getting up to speed or up a hill. My old Golf GTE had a "GTE mode" that always tried to keep 10+ miles of range so you'd get the performance when you wanted it.

I did come across a stunning lease deal on the Passat.
Have decided that the first thing to do is sort out the paint on my Hyundai. So going to get the areas where the paint has flaked off fixed. Think I’ll have to part exchange the car as don’t want the hassle of a private sale if more paint flakes off.
Guess I could try part exchange it at Hyundai with the paint flaking - bet they deny responsibility!
