Looking at having a motorhome built and wondering why you don’t see more double deckers converted with the extra berth you get.

Anyone have any tips for companies that have done conversions or any I can look at or maybe reasons why you don’t see more?

Only companies I’ve seen are Starcruiser etc that do tour buses.

Thanks!

Low bridges & access to some areas a problem for double deckers? Too long for UK?

I'd guess ferries would be expensive too.

Okay for keeping in the UK but the 4.2m limit for tilt trailers in Europe means the chunnel is a no go..

Headroom is one concern. As a student I travelled on coaches a lot and double-deckers have limited headroom on both floors. That's not an issue when you're sitting down, but in a motorhome you will be walking around, standing up in the shower and so forth. My coach days were a long time ago but I think it was just above 6 foot on the lower deck and just below on the upper deck.

There's a guy on YouTube who converted a Neoplan double-decker and you can see when he's showing it off that people are always sat down.

So, the luxury motorhomes you see are either single-storey or single storey with a raised bit for a garage below at the back.

If you build one inside a double-decker coach it would be fine on both counts - I've seen plenty of double deckers on the motorways of Europe and I've seen double-decker coachers on the Channel Tunnel... I wouldn't want to be the one driving but they are allowed inside le shuttle.

There's another issue I hadn't thought of when I posted about the internal height... US-style big motorhomes and coach conversions in general aren't allowed on a lot of campsites due to the weight. I've camped in the UK and France and seen 7.5 tonne limits at several campsites, so whilst you'd be fine with something like a Mercedes 812 or even something like an Iveco Eurocargo (assuming it's pretty enough for the campsite owners to let on-site), you'd be overweight in any coach.
