I've been playing with the idea of buying a relatively cheap people carrier for around the £1k mark, something like a 1.9 TDI Alhambra/Sharan/Galaxy, then converting it into a temporary campervan. The key is temporary as I wouldn't want to do anything to it that an insurer would class as a modification, so not drilling cabinets in or beds, I'd be wanting to do it nice and basic with some form of mattress sleeping arrangement, portable toilet and camping cooker sort of thing. Has anyone done any form of camper to a people carrier be it temporary like my idea or something permanent? I looked at Tranny vans but I find Alhambras are still quite pleasant to drive. Is travel to France and Spain currently permitted with a motorhome? It's my first time attempting anything like this so bare with me tongue out

Wellhouse do conversions of imported people carriers if you want ideas:

Have you had a insurance quote for a camper modification, as diy van conversions don't seem to be unreasonable?

Why not. Peugeot 806 is another contender.

Yes, just doing a people carrier one right now.

Very simple, seats removed, new industrial carpet (because the original one was minging) bed platform, gas ring and bottle, water carriers, tupperwarey type storage boxes for food, clothes and sundries, simple solar lighting, small solar panel for charging other stuff.

More of an off road/overland rig than long distance cruisy camper so no portable toilet (and I don't really want my piss and turds sloshing around out back as I drive hurl).

Mitsubishi Delica Spacegear with lift kit and 31" tyres, ramp over ground clearance is now 50cm so it'll go anywhere. Cost £1200, total outlay will be under £1500.

The sloshing makes it easier to deal with, it's worse if you've been standing a while without moving.
Needs the lumps broken up to pour out the spout.

Anyone for oxtail soup?

I take delivery of my Alhambra tomorrow. Needs a turbo but the spec was absolutely perfect as was the price. It's a PD130, aiming to get it ready for early December for a couple of test nights here before hopefully taking it to France and Spain in Jan.

Anyone watch the urban stealth campervan man on YouTube. He's been living in a converted Pug Partner for the last three years. Van cost about £1k and he spent about £500 converting it himself.

I slept in a galaxy many years ago in a hammock attached to the seat belt loops, it was rather comfortable.

personally id be using it like a tent, have mainly camping equipment, cook under the tailgate etc. not doing any sort of conversion.

Thought about this a few times. You've thought of the right vehicles as they all have a flat floor. Turbo diesels so a good chance of the best fuel economy too.

Let us know how you get on !

It is. It's also now up for sale as I'm never gonna actually get to use it thanks to yet another lockdown.
