Hi all,

We bought our (used) caravan in Feb this year and I want to get it serviced over the winter. How often do Caravans need servicing? It’s a sterling Eccles if that makes a difference?

I know it needs doing every 12 months to keep in warranty but what happens when it’s out of warranty? Still every 12 months?

How much roughly should I expect to pay?

Finally, I’m based in South Yorkshire, can anyone recommend a place to get the caravan serviced?

Thanks in advance.

I have a motorhome which is similar to but not exactly the same as a caravan. I normally get a habitation check done every two years i.e. all the "household" aspects of the 'van - gas, electricity, water, leisure battery, dampness tests etc. I also get a mechanical service on the vehicle every two years (I don't do huge amounts of mileage).

If you haven't had a habitation check since you bought the caravan, I'd get that done as a priority as some of the items checked could be lethal to the occupants if not working properly - especially gas appliances.

Thanks Eric. We won’t be using it again now until after winter so plan to get a full service done before we next use it.

We have our caravan serviced every spring by a mobile caravan technician who comes to our house to do the work rather than to where we store it.

It costs £160 and from memory he strips, cleans and adjusts the brakes, checks the Alko hitch, makes sure all of the electrics and gas are working and carries out a damp check.

I get a sheet with the works done and a sticker to say it has been serviced. The chap is from Leeds but I don't know how far he travels if you're in South Yorkshire.

We have a habitation service done annually and a vehicle service done when it goes in for MOT on our motorhome. It's a cost I could do without but it's worth it I think.

If the caravan still has the swift warranty intact you need to have it serviced in a window before it’s original purchase date normally 60 days.

Www.approvedworkshops.co.uk is the place to find a service tech to keep the warranty valid.

For a single axle most charge between £160 and £200 twin axles are more normally £190-£230. I would recommend using a mobile technician over a main dealer.

I’d offer my services to you but I’m based in North Wales

Thanks all. Is a habitation service usually covered as part of a normal service?

Not for motorhomes. Two entirely seperate things.

A habitation service is a service of the 'Living side' of a caravan or motorhome. A standard caravan 'full service' is a chassis and a habitation service rolled into one. Some folks on seasonal pitches only have a habitation service as their caravan never touches the road, however to maintain the manufacturers warranty you'll need a full service.

If you private message me your Cris number by private message I can check your caravans current status (on the swift system) regarding its warranty and service history if you would like?
