Hi all, we're new to Caravanning as we only picked up our first even 'van late last year. We did manage to use it 3 times though and enjoyed it massively!

For summer this year we are thinking at maybe Scotland or Germany as our main holiday and we can't decide which! Can anyone help us decide with any advice / wisdom or recommendations of good places or campsite to visit in either place?

Thanks in advance

Me and my wife did a nice 10day Scotland trip in 2010.
Stayed on caravan and camping club sites, a couple of nights on each.
First stop Millorochy bay on Loch Lomond, then up to Glen Coe, then up to Rosmarkie finally down to Perth and home.
Had good weather also.

They are a little spread out but if you are heading north then you might wish to have a look at;

Thurston Manor - Innerwick (near the Nuclear power station though, if that bothers you!)
Riverview - Monifieth (near Dundee if that bothers you!)
The Gart - Callander
Blair Atholl Castle.

All along the Rhine, the Mosel, you have some fabulous huge campsites with everything you can think of and generally they tend to be opposite to some of the old towns also along the Rhine/Mosel.
The towns are realy picturesque and also you can camp in the vinyards.
They all tend to have their own Breweries so produce various beers all very good.

We love going there and the weather tends to be better than the UK in summer.

I'd say Germany (it's probably cheaper for a start). We had a wonderful trip around Germany, Poland, Czech rep in our motorhome last summer. The weather was exceptional. People great and the towns and cities are beautiful. Food and eating out is a LOT cheaper than in France (especially beer!).
Roads are generally very good especially when you leave the autobahns (smooth and lacking in potholes).

Enjoy!

Germany is brilliant. We (me, Mrs P and girls age 8 and 4) took the campervan all the way down the the Alps in Bavaria, stopping at sites picked using the ASCI European camping smartphone app when we'd had enough driving. Sites always had room and were always good. Lots of them are on lakes (not just the Alpine ones). Bodensee (aka Lake Constance) is great, with pretty wine-growing villages around it, plus the seaside vibe of Friedrichshafen and its Zeppelin musuem.

Damn you boys, thought we had summer sussed with a trip to France in our Hymer but all this talk of Germany has got me sold!

I have the benefit I work in Germany every fortnight so I'm bi-lingual but I wasn't aware of how easy and pleasant it would be to motorhome there.

You will love it, Germany is one of our favourite countries for travelling in with a motorhome, as is the case with whatever is your hobby in Germany it is exceptionally well catered for.
As I said above down the Rhine & Mosel there are riverside campsites everywhere, and they tend to be opposite the lovely old towns and villages with lots to do and see.
Plus if you have bikes the cycling is fantastic along the cycle routes that go for miles, or just around the local towns and villages.

Enjoy

Random shout out for the Sango Sands campsite up by Durness, top North West of Scotland, added bonus of some pretty decent roads in the area.

I say pretty decent, as in mid NC500 and http://www.stevecarter.com/random/twits.htm

It is small, but very friendly and helpful.

Also the best place on the British Isles to witness the Northern lights I am lead to believe.
