Having been in Aus for the last few weeks in a rented motorhome, I've seen some pretty awesome camper trailers with foldout bits here, there and everywhere. Impressive suspension setups too for offroad treks.

Do we have anything similar back in the UK, but without the offroad bits? Nearest Google throws up are pop-up caravans. The Aussie ones don't look like they are built to cope with our lovely rain, but otherwise I really like the idea of them.

South Africa do similar types. They are great but then we do caravans which is arguably better ... But less man points.
Oh, the trailers are BLOODY expensive for what they are!

My brother's colleague made his own:

Couple of rooftents on the top, 3-way fridge/cooler on the front, aluminium side panel fold down to make worktops, behind the doors were carpet lined compartments with plastic storage boxes for food, plates, utensils etc. Small gas stove packed in there too. The inside compartment accessible from the rear was for carting wood for braais as it was Southern Africa after all.

Yes, there are several makes! The daddy is the Holtkamper Kyte XL, which I would love. Dutch company. AT £16k+, it's not cheap (cheaper than most new caravans, though).

But, if you look here you will see there are several other makes, a lot cheaper: http://www.blackcountrycaravans.co.uk/trailer-tent...

I'd love to see the look on a caravan club warden's face when you rock up with that!

Me and the Mrs were very impressed with the OPUS folding camper we saw at a show earlier in the year - so impressed, one could prise us out of a tent.
I was told they are Aussie imports.

They seemed a lot of money to me, when compared with the Kyte XL.

Folding campers are also available from 3Dog in Germany, however the Aussie off-road caravans are the real interesting ones. Given that there are only few areas in Europe where you can boondock I am not sure they make so much sense here.
