Over 3.5t Combined
Discussion
Hi,
I have been offered use of a caravan by parents whenever they don't have plans to use it. We are wanting to take up this offer but I have just added up gross weighs of car and van and it comes to over 3.5t, I gained my licence in 2001 and therefore I don't have the required category.
Realistically how much cost and time is it going to be to pass relivant part of my licence to tow above 3.5t? I have itchy feet at the moment with my current car and am thinking I could maybe slightly downsize (weight) and just do that instead of doing tests.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Licences held from 1 January 1997
If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997 and have an ordinary category B (car) licence, you can:
drive a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes or 3,500kg MAM towing a trailer of up to 750kg MAM
tow a trailer over 750kg MAM as long as the combined weight of the trailer and towing vehicle is no more than 3,500kg

I did a 1 day course and test but had towed quite a bit before, got to learn it all properly this time! Wasn't worth the hassle of trying to do it with my own outfit as their pricing was good.
