Hi,

I have been offered use of a caravan by parents whenever they don't have plans to use it. We are wanting to take up this offer but I have just added up gross weighs of car and van and it comes to over 3.5t, I gained my licence in 2001 and therefore I don't have the required category.

Realistically how much cost and time is it going to be to pass relivant part of my licence to tow above 3.5t? I have itchy feet at the moment with my current car and am thinking I could maybe slightly downsize (weight) and just do that instead of doing tests.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

i always thought that after 2001 you can't tow anything over 750kg so you will need a towing entitlement

Licences held from 1 January 1997
If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997 and have an ordinary category B (car) licence, you can:

drive a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes or 3,500kg MAM towing a trailer of up to 750kg MAM
tow a trailer over 750kg MAM as long as the combined weight of the trailer and towing vehicle is no more than 3,500kg

It's going to cost you between £500 and £750 to take your B+E license.

I did mine last year and it cost just under £750. I could have made it cheaper by using my own vehicle but that would have only saved around £100 and I didn't want to put my clutch through it!!

Me too with these guys who id recommend

http://www.tag-trailer-towing-training.co.uk

I did a 1 day course and test but had towed quite a bit before, got to learn it all properly this time! Wasn't worth the hassle of trying to do it with my own outfit as their pricing was good.

If reducing the amount you want to put into the caravan by 15 kg is not going to be an issue then contact caravan manufacturer and have MTPLM reduced by 15 kg
