We have owned a new motorhome, (well two actually) since 2008, best thing we have ever done, however.....
Motorhoming ain't cheap....(not talking about a VW small campervan)
A decent new one will set you back around £35k, even a GOOD used one will be £15k plus.
You can get an old shed for £4k if you fancy going round like a 60's hippy...
Site's are not cheap....£25pn average, bear in mind you can stay in a travelodge for around 30 if you book in advance.
You need somewhere to keep it, we are lucky, have a large garden, but so often you see them stuck in front of a lounge window in a small property.
Good points:-
Freedom.
Fairly low depreciation and insurance, but factor in interest charges if you have to use finance, is it such a cheap holiday after all?
I would suggest hiring one for at least a week, (Around £800)......bear in mind you will still have to pay site fees.....(another £200 plus) to see if it's for you, a weekend is not long enough imo)
Any questions?....please feel free to ask.

For years we had a Type 2 Bay windows VW. Not a motorhome exactly but near enough.
We had a routine on site and it worked well but didn't figure out one aspect that was frustrating, namely if you went to a place with the intention of a stay more than one or two nights, if you wanted to go out it was walk or pack everything up, including awning and come back later to find your pitch nicked.
Thought about a free standing awning but watched someone who had one take so long in the pouring rain try to park close enough to connect up again that I reckoned could have had our awning up in the time.
The best times we found ours really came into it's own was genuine touring with night stops only and weekends, pitch up after work on Friday, head home Sunday afternoon.
Having said all that we're thinking of giving hire a hymer a go maybe next year.

My advice...
Get the biggest van you can that you are ok with driving. Dont jump into a 14 day touring holiday to start with. Do 1 or 2 nights to start with. That first trip will be learning how the thing works!!
We did 40 ish trips in our motorhome over a 2.5 year period and the longest we went for was a week and in general just 2 nights (Fri / Sat).
Fuel can be expensive, £100 for a weekend for us was the norm - 200/300 mile round trip most weekends depending where we went. Food we generally took with us maybe £40 ish for a weekend with some decent food for BBQ and a couple of bottles of wine for wifey.
It takes an age to get anywhere.
