We are off in our new to us caravan a week on Monday and apparently TheSurveyor suggested using http://www.carabike.com/ however this is too wide to fit the garage in the caravan.

So options are something similar, or using said item in the aisle of the caravan, of a rack attached to the the back of the car, although on reflection that might not be a bright idea as the that will bean a lot of weight on the back of the car.

I just stand our bikes up in the van, wrap extremities with towels to prevent rubbing and bunjy them in place.

Can you not put a rack on the roof of the car?

Shame that the stand won't work. can you used bungee cords to secure in place? We use the stand, but also strap to the bunk ladder... (ours has bunks on the side rather than the back.

A bike rack on the roof off the car two problems:-

- It's a 4x4 so I can't reach
- A few years ago I had an Impreza and off wife was given a bike by her parents. So on the roof it goes along with mine which has been put their lots before. So all ready to go, and wife says "Are they secure?" needless to say I respond "Yes of course". So off we go. Come to a junction and turn left, and there'p to buys an almighty crash from above. Stop and investigate and wifes bike has fallen over and the pedal dented the roof. Never mind put it back upright and carry on. Get to destination, remove bikes from roof, and then discover the wheels on wifes bike are buckled and wont turn. So off to bike shop to buy new wheels for a brand new bike!

Experience put me off roof racks!

Anyway ordered a stand on Amazon, although it wont take bikes with disc brakes which mine has, so will have to prop mine up. Wife and daughters can go in stand

I use a combination of methods for carrying bikes on my Defender.

The main method is a tilt & slide roof rack which makes loading/unloading easy...

The other method I use is a Maxxraxx bike carrier fitted behind the tow bar which leaves the tow bar free for towing (but watch your tow bar weight limit)...
