So the campsite we are going to allow's fires as long as they are not on the ground. Is there any obvious reason that I have overlooked that means having a small wood fire burning in a small circular BBQ would be dangerous / inadvisable?

We used one of these at the weekend, worked a treat and no burnt grass. I don't see why your BBQ shouldn't do a decent job as long. Just don't overfill it.

Only thing I've found is that if you get them too hot the paint on the barbecue bubbles and often catches on fire. You then have to deal with a flaming barbecue spewing toxic fumes for a few minutes until it all burns off. After that it's fine biggrin

Only other problem is the barbecue will rust a lot quicker with no paint on it. I wouldn't do it with anything decent but if you have a cheapo barbecue (my camping one is from Lidl) then nothing to worry about.
