Badly let down by the Camping and Caravanning club
Discussion
Been towing 'vans for years but SWMBO never showed any interest in driving the car with the van on the back, even to the extent that last year I pulled a muscle in my back and she still wouldn't drive. Said she didn't know how and I'd shout at her.
Back in early March the C&CC mag was advertising caravan manoeuvring courses so I secretly booked her on a course for this coming Saturday as a present for her birthday which is tomorrow. For the last week she's been trying to get out of me what I've bought her and I've been winding her up with snippets of maybe it's paragliding, maybe it's motorbike riding, or waterskiing or rock climbing etc etc, but either way she's all geared up for her surprise tomorrow. All she knows is we're out for the day on Saturday, so she's all excited.
Now comes the downer. At 2:30 today I got an email from the C&CC saying they're cancelling the course due to that good old catchall, "unforeseen circumstances". They will offer a refund and, now get this "a £10.00 Site voucher as a token of our compassion in this situation".
I don't know what you all think but I reckon that's crap and nowhere near good enough. It really isn't the money, but to cancel at such short notice with just a standard, "it ain't our fault" excuse I think is very very poor. And I shall be telling them so tomorrow.
Any feelings or suggestions anybody? Or should I just let them have both barrels?

In fairness Colin, that's a st birthday present that benefits only yourself
But yes, it's also very poor from the C&CC. Give them both barrels.
And spend half an hour booking her in on a spa day pronto and don't ever mention the caravan course - you've been well and truly let off the hook!!!!

If she ever finds out you purchased a caravan towing experience day for her birthday, you will be spending rather more time sleeping in the thing than you anticipated....the next six months springs to mind
Get out really fast and buy her something that is at least two of the following.... sparkly/expensive/sparkly

I've had similar discussions about my other half being able to tow. She has under duress had a go and decided it's not too bad, but we will be in the slow lane all the way.....
Not sure about manoeuvring. Did not dare try that.
I would imagine the course is run by one or two people and if they go ill that they are screwed. Also sounds like you've had a lucky escape.

I disagree, if the GF doesn't appreciate the practical benefits of a towing course then id dump her. I bought my wife cooking lessons for Xmas at a local college. I think she appreciated it, not only for the cooking lesson but also for being made to realise her cooking is crap.
Truth hurts.

Hmm, well you've made me look at it from a different point of view and I reckon you're all right. I've had a lucky escape. Told her about it over dinner to explain why she wasn't getting a pressie tomorrow and at first she was livid that I'd booked the course. Then saw the funny side of it. says she's glad they cancelled it 'cos no way would she have done it
She's spent the last hour on-line looking for weekends in Barcelona. Not sure if I'm going too though.
Oh and we've been married 40 years so not exactly in the first flushes of yoof.
