there seems to be a shortage of trailer tent fanboys (and girls) on ph. i was looking for a dandy originally but the seem quite desirable and hence pricey. so my mate (who knows too much about the subject to be trendy) suggested a conway challenger. i was a regular in a tent but this is such a big step up with regards to comfort, warmth and space without the storage and weight issues of a caravan. the pic shows my possibly unique tow car - https://flic.kr/p/o4FwQa

anyone else have on, like/dislike?

Having just got our first little two berth caravan , going from a tent. I found folding campers quite expensive used.

All the disadvantages of a caravan with none of the advantages....

I can't really see the point....

Just my opinion of course.

you sound like my boss! mine is much more compact than a caravan when folded, so can fit (just) in front of the house. and its lightweight so can be towed by smaller cars (not really an issue for my pseudo sports car).
i view it as a kind of grand tent with decent seats, beds, water supply and a cooker.

Easier to tow with better MPG. Cheaper tolls when abroad. Two fixed double beds.

Takes 15 minutes to set-up though but I like that part the best smile

We really want a motor home but I don't want to spend 30k I don't have.

Edited to say - The best bit though is we aren't boring old caravan owners!

That's me a boring old caravan owner at ........................ 29 ! :-)

Sure they have their advantages and until now I didn't know they had as much going on inside as that. They were just too expensive for a nice one at the moment.

price is an interesting point, they are a similar amount to a caravan new but looking at the pics above, well appointed inside. mine is from the mid nineties and is in almost new condition, but obviously not as luxurious as the newer stuff. it cost me less than £600 though, so hardly expensive.

I'm sitting on the fence here.

On one hand, I quite like them. I like that they're compact when folded and I like the canvas tenty thing, especially if you're moving away from tents to something with a few more comforts.

I like the low setup time and the onboard toilet and shower.

But the one thing I do not get at all is when you're packing them away when wet. Then you need massive space at home to unfold them to let them dry. That's the bit I do not get. Compact when folded and most definitely not compact when unfolded. How do you get around this?

And £30k for a motorhome? I was in the same position as you last year. I was 'advised' that £30k would be a good amount for a good motorhome. But I spent half that on one of THE most solid and well-built motorhomes in existence. A German Mercedes RMB.

In case anyone on here is unsure of the B only licence towing law then here is the one extra rule for the towing of a trailer over 750 kg plated MAM on top of all the usual towing rules ...

.... the vehicle GVW added to the trailer plated MAM must not total more than 3500 kgs

That is the total of the plated weights not the total of the actual weights

You folks probably know that but I thought it worth a mention on a thread like this

A good find there I think, if we could have found one at that price we might have had one. I was surprised that it looks like there is a proper little toilet in there , but I don't know about a shower. Both toilet and shower were requirements by the mrs and I quite like my own too.

So we were quite please with our little 1995 2 berth last year for £950 with a a bit of kit with it. Cheap dog friendly holidays every month or so if we can!

That toilet compartment looks high. Does it fold?

My parents had one when I was younger (bit more basic than the above picture in that it didn't have electric, fridge, cooker, toilet or lighting) and bought a caravan for a few reasons:

- arriving at a site late at night, it took too long to erect;
- stopping overnight, it took too long to put away again in the morning;
- you had to sleep in the car overnight when we arrived very late at night for a ferry crossing;
- there wasn't enough storage when it was packed away so the car was always full;
- you couldn't put bikes inside it when travelling;

Everything folds down to around 2ft including the toilet. There is limited storage inside, enough room for clothes, bedding, food awning etc but not adults bikes.

The tent part is acrylic and not canvas so can be packed down wet but does need to be dried but packing away for long periods.

TBH we have been looking at caravans but would need to buy a new tow car so can't justify the cost.

So the list price of the one above is £15,214, and the awning another £1,375.

It weighs circa 1,000 kg. So it's a bit lighter, but costs as much as a caravan. On top of this you have to erect the thing, then an awning.

I'm out....
