Motorhomes with a towed/toad
Discussion
Hi
Could any experienced towers advise on the following?
- Is the key to look for a car that is as light as possible?
- In terms of towing I have seen cars on trailers; cars with just the rear wheels down; and cars with all 4 wheels down. Are there advantages/disadvantages to this?
- Engine-wise on the MH what suggestions would there be size-wise. Obviously being PH the bigger the better but are we looking at diesel in preference to petrol (or LPG)? 2.8, 3.0litre or bigger? Turbo? Can engines get modded to improve the torque for towing?
- What is the effect on mpg?
- Anything esle?
Cheers

I think the towing laws are changing regarding A frames which may only leave a small trailer option.
I'm sure someone will have the actual details on the change.
I've weighed up towing and come to the conclusion the only time I might want a vehicle to use whilst camped up would be on trips abroad, and I reckon I can hire a vehicle cheaper than humping one all over Europe.

ISTR there are some issues with A frames in some countries too - like Spain. We, too, have come to the conclusion that hiring on occasion is cheaper than owning and towing another vehicle.
We've gone through the same process and have come to the conclusion that we'll either...
A) Hire a trailer to take the car
B) Go to campsites near a bus stop if we need to get around
C) Get the bikes out
D) Walk
E) Hire a car - Some sites in France even have hire cars available
