Bought an old Hymer
Discussion
First post in this forum, but thought I'd share my new van with you all. It's an '86 Hymer B534. Yes, she's old, but she only has 90,000 kilometers on the Fiat 2.5 diesel engine, and the interior is really, really clean and well looked after.
Can't wait for our first trip away All I need to do now is get the fridge running on gas....

Old Hymers are a lovely classic choice. Built so well and can still shame many a new model.
You'll not have to worry about depreciation either.
Add refillable gas, a good leisure battery and replace as many bulbs as you can with LED's and you'll be just fine.
Watch out for your electric water heater element. Many get abused.
(By the way, I'm writing this sitting outside my 22 year old RMB-Mercedes at a campsite in Henley-on-Thames, fresh coffee by my side, sun shining....)

I think we got a bit of a bargain - paid 6250 for it. Yes, there's a few things that I'd like to do, such as put solar in (I have everything for it, just need to actually fit it), and also add on board fresh water.
Originally it was supplied with a porta potti and no on board water. It's since had a casette toilet fitted by a previous owner, and has grey waste, so thet next job is to get rid of the external roller water tank and fit a 50 litre fresh water tank under the sink. It's been ordered, so should be a simple enough job to do. We'll stick with the whale pump to keep it simple.
What else.... Errrr, I think that's about it for now! Just working through everything to make sure it's all working, and so far - so good! Oh apart from the previous owners only ever used when on hook up, and had an electric water heater fitted, bypassing the original on board gas based heater. As we plan to be mainly not on a site if we can help it, I'll be removing that and going back to gas only. Maybe at some point in the future I may splash out on a dual fuel heater, but that's for another day.
We'd looked at the different layouts of these, and decided that for just the two of us that the rear U lounge was the best - it feels really spacious in here for something that's only 19 feet long! Can't wait to get away
