If you have a motorhome and can do without the power hookup, Canterbury park and ride is geared up for channel crossers and is as cheap as you can get:

Lovely spot and free 1 mile from the port.

We parked overnight at a service station (http://www.stop24.co.uk/) the night before an early Dover ferry a couple of years ago. I don't think there were hook ups though. There was a sign up saying overnight parking/camping was £20 but we were only stopping for a maximum of 6 hours, so we spoke to the warden going round and he pointed us in the direction of a bus stop/layby on site to park in where we could avoid the charge. A bit naughty of him really but he agreed that £20 was a rip off for a few hours. The actual service station was shut (despite its name!) but the petrol station was open with toilets.
