2 Adults and 2 Kids (under 10)
Hoping to go to the New Forest area for 3 nights.
Will pick a campsite with the usual facilities (not roughing it yet)
Any advice on essentials would be much appreciated.
NB Tent is a Vango with carpet sheet so a good quality one with plenty of room.

1. Airbeds. Double for you and singles for the kids.

2. Good sleeping bags. Go for synthetic Season 3 bags (good for temps around -5). Dont buy cheap generic use bags. It gets cold outside in the UK even in summer and decent bags are a must.

After that its whatever else you need to make your stay comfy - good folding chairs, table, bbq, decent lamp etc

Blimey that was quick
airbeds, sleeping bags and lighting now on the list.
Stupid Question but has anyone gone camping and not cooked?
I'm just trying to minimise the hassel factor. Obviously I would be using Google before I go to make sure we know where all the local eating places are located.

Comfortable chairs rank very highly on my list. If you plan to spend any time drinking/BBQing/sitting around then deffo get nice chairs. Oh and something to keep your beers cold.

Frankly if you really can't be arsed to cook a bacon sarnie or make a cup of tea then you'd be better off in a B&B. you will regret not having the most basic of cooking facilities. At least a kettle, frying pan 4 x plates, mugs and bowls plus cutlery of course.

Cooking can be kept to a minimum but a good BBQ in the evening is what it's all about IMO.

Get a couple of these http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/hi-gear-portable-gas-c...

and a frying pan and a kettle so you can at least make coffee and bacon sarnies for breakfast. The gas refils are cheap. 5 for £10 or something like that.

What about breakfast etc?

You could do that but part of the fun is the cooking smile even if 1 or 2 of the evenings (or even breakfast) you could use a disposable BBQ.

Fancy camping cookers are expensive but im the master of cheap camping, their are cheap and good cookers available, they might not be the best option for a family though.

Mallet...

Roll of bin bags (good for laundry/wet clothes/making impromptu waterproofs)

If you take a gas cooker, you'll need something to stand it on (could just be a couple of bricks, but it needs to be off the ground) + gas cylinder

Flip-flops/sandals or wellies that you can get on and off easily for midnight walks to the loo

Even cheaper at B & M Bargains, £3.99 for 4 (or 5, can't remember offhand).

A decent pump if using airbeds, 12v ones are great.

As mentioned, a rubber mallet. Out of 18 families camping last weekend we were the only ones with one, it got well used!

Decent cooler box, perhaps one of the gas powered ones if not on hook up.

Do you get bitey insects in the New Forest? If you were camping in Scotland you'd need tactical nuclear insect repellant to avoid misery.

Decent tent pegs/rock pegs. The ones they supply with tents are hardly up to the task.

Some form of water reserves - you'd be amazed how much you can use with a family.

We found a washing up bowl useful as well.

Echo the comment on chairs - sitting on the ground is not comfortable for long periods (evenings)

Delta pegs.

When the end of the world comes, all that will remain will be cockroaches and a tent will still be standing if it was guyed down with Delta pegs!

Double Skillet to give you infinite meal options (rather than just beans of toast)

Footprint groundsheet (if one is available for your tent) - makes pitching in the right place childs play.

An emergency tool kit.... spare poles if possible, gafger tape, spare guy lines, lump hammer, spanner or mole grips for the gas connections
