Best place to hire a campervan / motorhome
Discussion
Just about to hire one for Goodwood FOS next week, found a company local to me that are very reasonable with several different motorhomes. It isn't brand new but looks OK. I'll post up how I get on in 10 days time. Bearing in mind it is high season rates it was £100 per night for a 4 night hire for a 5 berth, this a fair bit less than the larger firms such as abacus quoted for same hire period.
I recently used ybuymotorhomehire, based off J3 M5 for a Scottish highlands trip. 7 berth van, took myself, wife and three children no probs. it was 2 months old so very clean etc. £750 for the week. Would definitely do similar again, my kids loved it. Not sure if that would be any good for you, notice you are north west based, but may give you an idea of price etc
We hired one two years ago from these people, http://www.unbeatablehire.com just found them from a Google search and they were close to home so we went over and had a chat with them. They sell motorhomes and run a database of owners who rent out their own M/H's and obviously charge the owners a commission. No idea what cut they get out of it but it's not a cheap thing. Can't remember exactly what it cost, but have a feeling for a week in May we paid over £600. We told them what we wanted and paid them and then a chap called us, who turned out to be the M/H owner and we sorted details out with him and collected the M'H from his home. Nice chap even gave our car a wash for us. We sort of did a deal with him and agreed that we'd call him direct next time but to be honest we weren't overly keen on the experience of M/H's. Great idea, but the day to day didn't work for us.
One thing the M/H owner told us after we'd brought it back is if you see one on someone's front garden it's always worth knocking and asking if it's available for hire, he reckons over half his rentals come from passers by. He runs his as a business, renting it out most of the time during the season, and he varies the price depending on how close to the required day it is. Cheaper if it's available next week, pricier if you want to book now for say June 2014. Drove past his house earlier in the year and noticed there's now a second one parked there so maybe it's a good business? Say he charges an average of £500 p/wk for 20 weeks a year, that's £10k income from a van costing what £40k. Not a bad business.
Last year we hired a v small caravan for a week's trial this time found one on Ebay. Chap was in Lincoln so a bit of trek to collect it then come back home to load it up etc, but it was a lot cheaper than the M/H and worked OK and in the end last August we bought our own van.
So Google or Ebay?

Mill Garage in the Scottish Borders is worth a look. They hire out aswell as sell & convert. My last 2 campers have come from there. Ask for Jimmy or Sandra.
