Last post of the day, I promise

As a kid, we used to camp a lot. Father used to use enourmous gas canister for the stove, would make suspension on mk2 escort sag when he put it in the boot.

Question is, was he being daft, have things moved on? What sort of weight gets burned per hour per ring? No point getting a huge bottled stove that lasts 2 years but dont want to be refuelling every hour either

What do people use, there will be 3 of us and as son has food allergies, i'll be cooking a fair bit i'd say

I use the double burner unit listed on the link below, fuel canisters are not huge and seem to last quite well. With it folding up as well it does not take up much space.

I started with one of these

But found the butaine cans froze up with prolonged use so I upgraded to one of these

And a 5kg propane cylinder. Never looked back.

Having the large gas bottle also allows me to run a gas powered fridge, essential for keeping the wine cool smile

My scout group and climbing club use these:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0009PUPX8/?tag=hydra0b...
The scout group fill it most days, but that is tea+coffee for 10+ people, as well as cooking breakfast and dinner for 10+ people!! Normal usage I'd expect a couple of days out of it, and they run off unleaded, which can always be found!!

The scout group also use 25kg butane cylinders and cast iron burners for the kids to use, they are much more hardy! Actually, these:

Bloody heavy though!

I've used Campingaz burners as they work well enough, you can get replacement bottles anywhere (Tesco even sell them, as well as just about every camping/outdoors shop) and whilst they don't cook quite as well as a gas ring at home they aren't far off:

To extend on this. Over the weekend we used three stoves, cooked 4 breakfasts and 2 dinners for 23 people and used less than 5 litres of fuel. The tank on the stove holds around a litre I think.

The main reason people use the larger bottles is cost.

Last time I looked the gas is almost half the price (per kg) every time you increase the size.
