I have an old canvas ridge tent in need of repair. It's been in my family for over 50 years and has a lot of sentimental value for me so I'm looking for a company I can trust to make a good Job of it.

The damage isn't too extensive, the guy ropes have perished and will need replacing, other than that it's in pretty good shape.

Does anyone have any recommendations? (preferably within reasonable driving distance of Sheffield, Chester or Worksop)

I'd say find a sailmaker but those will be thin on the ground round your way; perhaps try an automotive upholsterer as they will have machines tough enough to sew canvas? You might have to supply them cord and stuff to replace the guy ropes with as it's not their usual business.

Thanks for the link, do you know of anyone who has used them before?

There seem to be plenty of places about that say they repair tents, my trouble has been judging if a company would have a good standard of work or not. I have zero experience of tent repairs, any pointers from those in the know would be appreciated.

I've only used them for spares myself and their service has been good.

Have a look through the forums here http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/

They seem so have a good reputation.

There is a canvas repair place in Burton upon Trent that I used to repair a tear in one of our tents (we foolishly lent it to friends... Never again!)

They removed the torn panel and replaced it with a new one that was a damned close colour match.

A very "old school" setup.... It is a converted house... You walk in, and there are bits of tents EVERYWHERE! But the old boy in there knows exactly where everything is, and seems to have an encyclopedic knowledge of makes and models seemingly as far back as the Jurassic era!

Not cheap (for what they did) but in my albeit limited experience, they did an excellent job.
