Hello again :-)

Am planning to keep this Motorhome for a good long time, so plan to Waxoyl it try and avoid the dreaded rust.

My question is, as its a coachbuilt van there is a combination of Metal/Plastics/Treated Wood and god knows what else on the underside of the van. Is it safe to just give everything a good blasting with Waxoyl ? If not what areas do I need to protect / avoid ?

Cheers

Andy :-)

Call me an eejit but the new cab transit chassis is galvanised i think and thats the only metal bit underneath, the floor will be marine ply or similarly damp proofed wood so is it really needed?
We retail stuff back to 03 and rust isnt a problem these days.

This article is more or less an advert for people that offer the service.

As you say its a long term investment, so why not do it yourself, it shouldn't cost to much, even if its just for your own peace of mind and as NHW said they are already pretty well protected.

Thanks for the replies all.

Balmoral, have heard of the Dynax, but from what I have read, its better than waxoyl for the creep and inside area, but is not as good for coating the outer areas if that makes sense. Plus to be honest I already have Waxoyl and used to use it 20 years ago so am happy with the job it does. :-)

Nagshead, To be honest thats what I am trying to find out. Having had a quick look, there are some areas of rust just starting on holes on the chassis where things have been attached, and some rust starting on the other metal. Not major just tiny dots as its 2008, but I want to do something to it now and look after it.

GAJon, If possible I hope to do it myself. Again thats why I am trying to find out what areas to cover and what to avoid. Had done a couple of searches on Motorhome Forums, and while some people do indeed Waxoyl there vans no one seems to give the details of which bits to do and which bits to avoid or if there is a danger to just putting it everywhere (exluding brakes of course).

Cheers :-)

PS GAJon, a while back when I first got the van, you mentioned you knew some nice sites up here in the North. Any chance of a PM or a reply on here with which ones you recomend.

OK Some pics to try and explain what/why am asking.

In General in good condition

But Want to treat these areas

So plan is rub down areas of light surface rust. Then waxoyl, question is do I just waxoyl everything or could that cause problems ?

My unqualified opinion is the underside of your van looks in pretty good nick.
I'd rub down the black painted bits, hammerite them then waxoil the lot. (with the exception of the spare tyre which would get a bit messy if you need it ) wink

Local to you on campsites.

Delemere C&CC site near Chester (and Oulton Park) is quiet but has one of those Go Ape couses near by and plenty of walks.

Near Carnforth Holgates have two sites - Bayview and Silverdale.
Bayview is quieter but has a pub and restaurant on site and only a short walk to town with pubs etc.
Silverdale has a pool and kids stuff.

I,ve just returned from C&CC site at Keswick, which is great for walks and the town of Keswick which has loads of pubs, restaurants, cafes all dog friendly.

Id go with what GAjon said, I asked the garage we use who have done a few for our customers and they remove any visible rust then do everything.

Thanks GAJohn, yep am very happy with the overall condition of the Van. Thats why to me its worth investing a bit of time to get it 100% then put some protection on it.

Cheers for the Campsite Recommendations :-) Cant Believe have had the van since 18th Jan, drove home from Portsmouth in a Blizzard in it, and since then its just been snow or rain every weekend. Except one weekend which I spent quickly fitting the reversing camera and looking under the chassis.

NagsHead, Again thanks. Could I be dead cheeky, would you mind asking the people who you use wether its 100% ok to spray Waxoyl on the treated wood/plastic bits/waste tanks etc. If I have to mask everything off its going to make the job a right pain.

Cheers

Andy :-)

The "car" before our T5 van was a LR 110 Defender (2007) and Waxoyl was essential. I had it done professionally - be warned that it's mucky stuff and does smell like tar. I stupidly bought a big can of it and the spray kit (about £40) and will never use it now!

It does work well and was sprayed everywhere except the exhaust sections. You can get black or "clear" (which is what I bought but had ours done black) and I paid £140 all in for the complete underside spray. Some companies charge a LOT more!

Another alternative that many prefer is Dinitrol.

Come on, make the effort!

Keswick last week, we had a BBQ on the Monday, mind you the missus ate hers in the van.

That's right, the S50 is for internal, and the UB for external.

Never mind all this modern stuff that forms a skin so that water can lodge underneath and do its evil work unseen.

Spray liberally annually with old engine oil and the ironworm will not be an issue, messy (I know this myself) but far superior (and cheaper) than all the arty-farty stuff you see advertised.

That has been my experience. Any heavy oil based spray will improve the non rusting properties of metal. Regular spraying will give significantly better rust resisting qualities. Waxoyl is pretty good but some of the heavier waxing products do seem to have better abrasion resistance. The most important thing is to use something and keep topping the stray up. Enjoy the van I think you will find this a wonderful freedom tool.
