First and foremost:

biggrin

After that, decent bedding, and enough towels. Warm and dry, you'll forgive privations. Cold and damp, even Dom Perignon will win very few brownie points.

Last time (and it was the first time),

we packed the car up and went literally that morning with no planning to callow top.

ate there and used all the pub facilities.

this time around my shed is huge so we can store lots of stuff for us to use,

Take your mobile switched off though, could be handy in an emergency + a swiss army knife.

after years of camping I would rate all my kit as essential, at the tracks I use basic backpacking gear as all need is somewhere warm and dry to sleep, however kit is an evolving thing. My main aim is to carry as little stuff as possible so not having anything visible during the day in the car is v-handy

I would say my tent and sleeping kit are paramount as I need a good night's sleep, upgraded self inflating mat from a £10 aldi one to a north face one so will see how that goes

To be honest im just really dipping my toe in,

The usual family holiday is now getting on for 5K

the kids seem to enjoy it, and i wish id have done it a little sooner (15 &11).
A lad at work said make sure you get swmbo on your side or youll never go again, so i made sure we had air beds and it was a decent campsite to begin with.

If you have a fridge or cooler in your camping setup, run it off the mains if you have hookup.
The 12v ones absolutely spank the batteries.

I just bought an electric hookup (rcd).
so we can have a brew and the kids can have hot choc etc.

we will take a disposable bbq next time as well.
or do you think we should try and get one of those cheap gas ranges, the one where the cylinder go's up the side of it?

Me and the mrs took one of those each camping in the summer, they don't cost too much to begin with and refills are cheap enough.

They do a good enough job at boiling water etc and even better when paired with a wind break!

Depends on the type of camping.

A 6 man giant tent isn't that handy when your backpacking.

We've gone from tenting it to campervan stuff; for the van it's probably the waterproof roof cover (elevating roof), the pup tent for the dog and diesel - lots of it.

Corkscrew. Forgot it once - never, ever again. It's now first thing to be packed.
