Me and the missus are just planning our trip away in the van.

We've (read she's) decided not to go to Italy, but to Spain but calling via Royan in France, where we are meeting some friends.

So planning the trip using the TOM TOM.
If I go Calias to Royan via the toll roads its 7 hours 33 mins and 474 miles.
If I go avoiding toll roads its 10 hrs 53 mins and 416 miles.

So will I use more fuel on the tolls at higher average speeds or more by driving over 3hrs more?

Just curious, I will probably do a mixture of both over the whole trip as the mood takes.

You will use less fuel driving at a constant speed, than if you have to speed up and slow down when for example driving through towns and villages, or on twisty roads.

But the scenery won't be so good from the motorway as on the minor roads........

According the viamichelin, the approx cost of going on toll roads is £133 (tolls + fuel).
The approx cost of going cross country is £82 (fuel)

How come you're not going via saint Malo?

I used to live in Royan, lovely place!

Interesting replies and varying views, as I wrote I'll probably do a mixture of both and it'll be what it'll be.

Was going straight down to Spain, the Royan divert is just a last minute add on.

So going Royan then Biarritz - Blanes, where we are meeting some more friends, then around L'Escala somewhere.
