Our 350,000 mile luton would manage 22mpg if you were careful.

Biggest problem with a luton is there is enough space to get seriously overloaded if you don't be very careful

I hired a petrol powered Transit Luton years ago and it wouldn't top 50mph and returned single-digit MPG. I had to fill it up twice to get to London!

Last time I drove one, (a VW crafter) it did about 20mpg. I’m a firm believer that anything with a Luton body shouldn’t be a 3.5t van, as if you put much more than a sofa and bag of sugar in it, you’ll be on the weight limit!

Van MPG varies massively by brand and also how fast you are driving.

A Luton van driven down the motorway is pretty much going flat out because of the (lack of) aerodynamics. The well used Transit Luton I hired about 10 years back did significantly under 20mpg on the motorway. Next time for a long trip move, we hired two smaller vans instead which used about the same amount of fuel in total and more carrying capacity.

Also, remember the maximum payload of a Luton van with a tail lift is not much more than for a Vauxhall Combo, so you can't legally load them anywhere near full unless you're carrying really bulky lightweight items like sofas or insulation.

Hired a 72 reg Luton from Enterprise last month to help my son move. Did 600 miles in a weekend and drove it like it was rammed full of breakables - did 25mpg.

The only reason to have a Luton is you are moving lots of light things. As said with tail lift you are looking at about 1000kg max, some crafters are over 1200kg

Whats the journey you are considering?
A 300 mile jaunt down the motorway could well use as much fuel as moving house yourself over the course of a weekend for instance.
