Temporary Export - customs procedures

Wondering if anyone can shed some light on temporary export procedures.
We import equipment from Italy and bring it in ourselves by road. We are familiar with this and it all goes smoothly. We use an Italian customs agent and a UK one.
This time we have to take some equipment back to Italy for repair, so need to do a temporary export.
The customs agent in Italy is asking for a copy of the T1 form, which they are expecting to be produced by our customs agent in the UK. Our customs agent is telling us that we need to stop at the Inland Border Facility in Ashford and that they will issue and print the T1 there based on a reference number which the customs agent has provided.
Does that sound right? I don't think our customs agent has a lot of experience in this, and I don't want to either get held up at the border or end up in a mess when we arrive.
