Whenever my local Sainsbury's gets a fuel delivery, they cone off the bit of forecourt including the air/water machine. This makes sense as that's where the tanker has to park.

They also cone off one row of pumps and the carwash. Surely the tanker isn't meant to drive through the carwash in the way out? So why cone that off?

Presumably health and safety. Round here the garage shuts altogether when a tanker is in.

When doing a delivery, the tanker is required an unobstructed route for departure for if things go bad.

The cones will be there to ensure that route cannot be blocked.

Also to keep idiots away.

I've done my share of tanker deliveries and you wouldn't believe the amount of people that will walk through the site, step over your hoses and almost fall down the hole.
Sometimes even with a fag in their hand.

I've always assumed it was to stop the tanker getting blocked in by some numpty parking their car.

I vaguely remember from my ADR training that tankers like a clear area of electrical equipment.

What qualifies as "bad" enough to want to make a sharp exit but not so bad you're willing to give it a go?

Pretty much anything out of the normal, I would think
