My HGV license is soon to expire, I'm 55 and will need a medical, haven't driven anything over 7.5 tonnes for about 15 years and unlikely/don't want to. But do need to keep my 7.5 entitlement. I passed my car test in 1984 so have grandfather rights on that? Or do I need a medical? My license says it's valid until 2037, thanks in advance for any advice.
Just to add I don't think a medical would be a problem, just don't want the expense /hassle etc.

On mine it has different expiry dates for each class of vehicle, is that the same for you?

It does, but it's the way the renewal just refers to lorry and bus no mention of classes.

I think you'll need to do the medical, I had a 7.5t entitlement from my car test and passed my (then class 1) 4 years later. I needed a medial last year when I turned 50, suspect you will too at 55.

pre 1997 LGV C1 will not need a D4 medical until age 70

Other LGV categories gained by passing a LGV test including the hidden C1 covered by the C can be gained back by passing a D4 medical in the future (no time limit) if they are left to lapse

This is better advice than mine.

Just a heads up - don’t use your GP for a medical as they charge a fortune. I use d4drivers.uk and it costs me (I think) about £50, and that includes the eye test if required.
