My daughter is looking for a new (to her) pickup. She's got about £20k cash to spend so probably about 5 years oldish. She wants a automatic though so it's narrowing her options. As per the title, which manufacturers have the best auto boxes?

I'm not an expert on pick ups but if the drivetrain in the Mercedes is the ubiquitus 2.2 diesel mated to the 7 speed torque convertor then I'd choose that. I run it in different applications and it's very solid.

Don’t think you’ll find an X class for £20k, the current Navara is the same under the skin and is available for £20k.

The Amarok has the sweet VAG dsg box which is tried and trusted, that’d be my choice.

Hilux, preferably with the 3 litre Diesel mated to the auto box, its reliable and durable and a much nicer drive than you might imagine.

I don’t think you’ll find an X class at all, they only built about 3….

No, the gearbox and engine in the smaller version is straight from the Navarra that it shares a platform with. Only the V6 (think expensive hen's teeth) has a Mercedes engine and box.

Yes, it's looking like a Navarra might be the best choice.

I believe all auto Amarok's have the ZF 8 speed.

Thanks all, she's bought a five year old, 50k miles Navarra. At £23k once the VAT has been added, I felt it was a bit expensive but it's the spec she wants and she's happy. Pretty sure she could have got a new one for that not too long ago but there again, I remember when all this was just fields.

We have two Navara’s at work, they are tge supervisors cars-only very rarely do I have to drive one ,if my lorry is off the road for some reason.
I think they feel very cheap, and handle like a bloody boat in a storm when towing anything-I’d rather drive a transit pickup.
