I'm looking for some help understanding the rules on this.

I'm considering buying a camper rates at 6500kg and want to use it to tow a trailer thats rated at 3000kg Total rated mass 9500kg

With grandad rights I can only drive a combo up to 8250kg.

The car and trailer weigh in at 2700kg and with what I want to carry in the campler it will weigh in around 5500kg Total around 7200kg. would I be able to drive this on my license as the actual mass is within my license or would it be based on the max permitted mass of both the trailer and camper.

I've tried the DVLA website and its not clear

I realise I can get both the camper and trailer de-rated but looking at is it was possible to avoid this.

Thanks

John

With a C1E licence you can tow a trailer as long as the MAM of the combination doesn’t exceed 12000kgs

On a C1 licence your restricted to 750kg trailer regardless

If you have passed your test before 1 Jan 1997 and have grandfather rights for C1E you’ll be fine with the 6500kg camper and 3000kg trailer

If you have only C1 entitlement then your snookered

Grandfather rights only allow a combination of 8250
So the motor home would need to be plated for a lower GVW ideally about 4500 , so as not to be in contravention of the license when using the trailer I think??

Vehicle plated MAM 6500 + trailer plated MAM 1750 = 8250 which is the max for a pre 97 C1+E
Licences go on plated weights

Either add +E to your grandfathered C1, or have the vehicle and trailer down-plated.

This is much easier than it used to be (no more insistence on suspension components being altered) but still a PITA, and the vehicle will still look like a full weight C1+E so I’d expect to get stopped a lot.

Another change is the option to go straight to C+E training and an easier exam, so this is now a far better solution and probably not much dearer.

For clarity, a C+E pass will give you full fat C1, C and C1+E as well as adding +E to all other groups.

The laws are changing, now the UK isn’t governed by EU license rules.
I haven’t looked into it as it doesn’t apply to me.

Not really. They’re able to change because we aren’t restricted by the EU now. They aren’t changing or becoming unaligned because we left the EU.
