I am considering a spec lift Iveco 6.5 to use privately as recovery for my own vehicles and also privately as transport with a trailer (due to current laws you cannot use spec lift to transport). I have a 6 wheel car transporter trailer 3.5t that I currently tow with land lover but hoping a spec lift will tow the larger cars 4x4's easier. I can insure it cheaply and easily on my traders policy.

I have a pre 1997 license so can go up to 8250kg which is fine for me.
The spec lift I am interested in is registered as recovery and is MOT exempt. If I use for private transport with trailer presume I need to MOT it ?

Will I be exempt from operators license and tacho etc for private transport only ?(probably only used a couple of times a month)

Spec lifting 4x4s is not a good idea , neither is RWD automatics or modern gearboxes without disconnected propshafts .
Getting many modern low cars on a spec lift can be a real PITA .

Is no mot exemption for that anymore, recovery or otherwise.

Private use yes exempt from o licence & tacho but you mentioned traders insurance, if the transported car isn't in your name, then expect to be clobbered.

If you keep it reg as recovery, then for 'disabled' vehicles no need for O licence, will need tacho in & calibrated but not have to use within 100km of base, if its transport, you'll need o licence.

You'll need a dcpc for any commercial use, unless you can prove its a v small part of yr other work.
