Your own personal situation could be awkward if for example you were an agency driver, whther the client would accept section 88 is debatable.
If you are in full time work, and hopefully kept the post office receipt of sending the application in, the in theory at least your company should allow you to drive so long as the rest of the requirements are met.
My applications always have to go to the medical dept due to childhood injury, some years ago i phoned DVLA and they sent a printed confirmation i could carry on driving whilst my application was in process, whether you'd get any response the way things are presently or if it would help your situation i don't know, sorry can't be more help.
As far as i know, most applications are taking 6/8 weeks presently.

Luckily for me I don't 'need' it.
I haven't driven a truck in about 30 years, but it's cheaper for me to keep the entitlement than a medical every three years for my taxi badge.
The problem will be at the end of October if I want to rent a car abroad.
Thanks for the info though. I guessed I'd be OK in the UK, and the 6-8 weeks I reckon is a minimum.

Because of a number of factors. 1. I couldn't get an optician appointment sooner for the eye check (GP not permitted to sign off on that any more) 2. I couldn't get a GP appointment any sooner for the medical and most importantly 3. I needed my licence for car rental on holiday late July.
Yes, I could have sent everything off and held on to my licence until the new one arrived, but stupidly thought that would confuse the cretins at DVLA and delay things. Which to be honest, it still might have done.

Sent off my renewal for my Class 1 at the beginning of August, must have been around 6th or 7th.
Still waiting.
Two questions, is this normal for DVLA in the current climate/covid backlog? And a licence check on line says my licence expired on 13th August, can I still drive?
I have been waiting on a car licence from the dvla after a year revoked. I put the paperwork in at the start of May. 6 weeks before I was due to get it back. Im still waiting on a licence. In this time I have had one letter from the dvla and no indication of when if at all I will get my licence. I now have my MP working on my case as even my GP has stated Im fit to drive. Still waiting.

DVLA throughout covid has not been fit for purpose through not allowing the staff to work from home because of security, staff striking because of covid cases on site. Its a joke. You cant even phone the dvla to chase your case up.
It's like trying to deal with an old Eastern Bloc government department. There is no rush, no sense of urgency, so thought for the consequences of their tardiness. They just clock on, do the minimum they can get away with, know they have a secure job and backing from a belligerent union.

When did this happen, only a week ago the doctor (not my own GP, another doctor, who has access to my medical records, but doesn't presumably run a Bentley Arnage and charges a rate working people can afford) did the eye test and signed me off, just as the numerous times before. My HGV entitlement expires in October and submitted my renewal in June. I had a response last week from DVSA stating the medical had been incorrectly completed by the doctor and I had to get an eye test and return it within 14 days or I'd have to start again.
Thankfully I managed to do that but expect the entitlement will expire before they get round to sending the new one.
Your experience is the same as the rest of the country sadly, there is nothing that can be done to address it. What a country we've become.

Got the application form here they sent me, i'd already applied for a form earlier knowing there would be delays and thats the one sent off.
Form D4 medical, page 2.
Vision Assessment to be filled in by an optician, optometrist or doctor.
Read on. A GP must have the correct optometrist qualification to sign off. Otherwise it's a visit to Specsavers.Form D4 medical, page 2.

I tweeted DVLA and they very helpfully replied with this link...

Scroll down.
So another couple of weeks or so for me.

According to that I should have my licence that I applied for in may. Even my MP cant get them to speed up the application.
I have also heard anytime the dvla need additional documentation from you. It get put to the back of the queue again so your looking at a further 6-10weeks after your last correspondence not your first application.
That is correct. It took me nearly six months last year to register my Trabant.
I don't know your personal circumstances, and don't want to know, but I would suggest your licence renewal is far from straightforward if you have been waiting since May and got your MP involved. That link was for 'normal' applications I suppose.

Yes you can. The law is extremely clear about this. Providing that they have your renewal in good time and that there is no reason for it to be declined, then you can drive legally as if you had your new licence, until such time as you do. No time limit.Obviously the law was written without allowing for a pandemic; but it remains unaltered.

Op, look up INF188/6, as above, you can carry on driving as long as you still meet the medical requirements, which presumably as you have already sent them your medical report you do. Incidentally, my licence arrived this morning, sent it off early July. Keep checking your licence status online, mine had been updated before the licence arrived.
