Yet again this rears its ugly head, I’ve tried avoiding it for years but a pick up is a good fit for my daily commercial use, occasional carrying loads that shouldn’t be in cars, not too pretentious, and just a bit more practical.

Budget creep has crept, and I don’t want an old battered truck so now I am considering the V6 Amarok, and likely still only the 3.2 Ranger.

I would like the more car like of the 2, as it won’t always be laden and never used off road.

The Amarok sounds the likely candidate, would I be correct?

Any real issues with either?

My neighbour with a 3.2 Ranger has had quite a few issues with his, not sure on the exact details but he says he won't buy another. No real experience of the Amarok but any reason you've ruled out a Hilux?

My 2016 2.4 is a great truck and has been flawlessly reliable. The 2.4 is perfectly fine, even for towing but the 2.8 seems to getting good reviews if you feel you need more power.

Only ruled out Hilux as I don’t like Jap cars, and they look very Jap to me. Could be ultra reliable and tough as nails but they just don’t float my boat.

The 3.2 Ranger does seem to throw lots of issues up when you search them.

Amaroks are now discontinued and there are no new unregistered ones left. There were three power version of the V6 at the end, I’ve driven them all and there isn’t much difference, buy the cheapest, it’s still ridiculously fast for a truck.

Kind of what I was thinking.

They remap well as well I hear.

I’ve owned a 2018 Ranger Wildtrak from new for a little over a year and now a 258V6 Amarok since early this year.

I sold the Ranger after a few issues and the frankly shocking service from the local Ford commercial dealers.

They are quite different vehicles. The Ford is better spec’d for the cost but is also far lower quality in both build and driving experience.
The Ranger 3.2 is a rough old beast and not particularly quick. The Rangers ride is very jiggly even with a couple of hundred kilos of tools and kit in the bed. It’s the only vehicle I’ve owned that has made the kids feel car sick when in the back seats.

Amarok ride quality, while still firm (it’s a commercial after all) is far more car-like and no issue with back seat passengers.
The VW V6 is in a different league to the 3.2 Ranger in both smoothness and especially performance.

Possibly the biggest issue if you’re buying will be the Rangers rusty chassis problem. Have a look on FB for Ranger rusty chassis group to get some idea of what you’re getting into.

In short the Amarok is at a higher price point than the Ranger but for good reason.

Should be picking up a V6 Amarok 2moro. Big difference to the Ranger.
