Im really close to ditching my 2x 3.5t tippers and getting 2x 7.5t tippers.

Maybe im deluded but i dont think it will add a huge cost per year but will mean
1. im legal as we can carry a lot more weight.
2. i should earn more as i can move more stuff quicker.

either way we would be legal which is important to me, these 3.5t trucks literally carry fk all.......

I think mentally i have prepped myself to jump the hoops and i need to do the test, along with a lad who works for me.

Only issue i have is i have been told by a few people to skip the c1 license and do the c licence 'just in case'

Im not going to lie that frightens me hehe

the tippers im looking at are either a fuso or isuzu, both of which are only a bit bigger than my 3.5t tipper and are tbh in terms of footprint probably smaller and easier to drive than a jumbo sprinter type van.

The lad who works for me as well is only 21 and while he's great in the 3.5t im not sure he would feel confident doing a test in a 12t truck, i know i dont. I believe the people id use have a 12t curtainsider, sounds fking massive to me hehe

Whats peoples thoughts? should i skip it and do the c or stick to the c1. it is unlikely i would ever get a bigger lorry, due to seemingly much higher costs. these trucks will be used like the 3.5t ones i already have, just carrying triple the legal weight. Its just when i speak to people its almost like your an idiot for not just doing the c licence.

Do the C licence. They're not as difficult to drive as you think they're going to be. By far the hardest bit of either C or C1 is getting your general driving back up to test standard.

Just do your C licence. There's little point in doing the C1, it just adds unnecessary time and cost.

It's not that hard and you will get used to it. It'll be one of those things where after your first lesson you'll get out and think 'wow, that wasn't bad at all, what was I worried about'

As said above, make sure you look into the o-licence and transport manager requirements.

Thanks all, maybe i will look at the c licence then. it isn't much more money.

With regard to legality this is what i have determined:

restricted o licence, about £3??

12 weekly inspections.

no cpc as driving isn't the main job

no tacho as driving with our own good with whatever km radius it is (100km iirc).

not sure on the transport manager, i do know i need to form a contract with someone who will be maintaining the vehicles, which i have and is based at the place where the trucks will be kept (at least i know if they dont start someones there hehe )

I dont think much cost per year will be added, even insurance doesnt seem much different, fuel consumption will be a few mpg less than now but we dont go far.
regarding 12 week inspections apart from the cost of the inspection i dont think it will be much worse, i keep my 3.5t tidy and from what i gather the 7.5 wont be a great deal different.

I have a restricted O licence.

As you say, no transport manager

Check times are decided by the Traffic Commissioner IIRC

Again, IIRC, CPC exemption is not as widespread as expected, but not a big deal really.

I think you'll find lorry parts much cheaper and more robust than van parts.

Good luck!

If you are carrying your own goods you don't need a transport manager.

What is your business?
