my 2019 man tge is unreliable as fk and the dealers are terrible, minimum 3 visits to fix any fault.
considering cutting my losses and going for one of these

How is reliability, and do the dealers look after you if you have problems?
man dealers are seriously reluctant to give a loaner, you liteally hae to shout the place down to get one when they have had 3 unsuccessful goes at fixing the unreliable pile of ste they supplied and you just want to go about your day earning a living, not sitting waiting on apathetic truck parts fitters who despise having to work on vans.

You will hear many woes here of dealings with Ford Commercial for servicing and maintenance.

It took 3 visits over a total of 22 days to fix a fault with my Ranger. On one occasion they had my vehicle for two weeks before telling me it was fixed. I collected it and the fault reoccurred within 5 minutes of driving away.

did you have a loaner while yours was off the road?

Yeah my new transit had an issue with the ad blue and popped up "no engine start in 500 miles", which is a week or so of work, no local ford dealer would entertain looking at it for at least a month.

I'm told they're one of the more reliable options though!

The TGE is a Crafter, I’m surprised to hear you’ve had trouble, we’ve got a couple and they’ve been ok.

I hate Ford dealers, no matter how good a Transit may or may not be you can guarantee the dealer will be awful.

We run Transit Customs and VW Transporters, the VW dealers are a pleasure compared to the local Ford dealership.

The new Vivaro looks ok, but the same issue with poor dealers I would think.

I wouldn't head to a Ford dealer if I were you.

I run a fleet of 350 vans/cars and have had numerous injector and head issues with the 2 litre diesel engine leading to a lot of downtime. The dealers are woeful with a few notable exceptions and I've never had so many manufacturer recalls on their products.

For reliability the Merc Vitos are in a class of 1 especially with the auto box. I service them at Indi's where possible to avoid Merc dealer pricing.

For the next procurement round for 150 plus vehicles I'll be looking towards the Japanese and Korean brands to compare to the Mercs depending on what their offer is.

I'm the luckiest ford commercial driver ever.

My van has never broken down. It's never had injector problems. Dealer is always available reasonably quickly and has always had a loan vehicle available.

Hopefully its replacement Ranger will follow on in the same vain.

I was doing a cctv job at an independant commerxial vehicle workshop today and asked what was a reliable big van.
None they are all ste was the reply eek
Coming up for day 13 of my man tge being broken and getting a bit fed up.
hired in a sprinter 316 and they feel a bit naff compared to the older sprinters.

We’ve run my Ranger, 3 Transit Customs, 1 Connect and 1 LWB Transit (similar to the link)

In for about 100k miles across the 3 Customs, 70k on the LWB, about 26k on the Connect and my Ranger is about to go for its second service this year (25k miles).

Ranger has been faultless.
Connect had a DPF software fault at about 8,000 miles, fine since.
LWB Transit gearbox/clutch/flywheel destroyed itself at just over 60,000 miles
1 Custom had a DPF software fault, the other 2 have been fine.

All in all, have found them more reliable than the Vivaro’s we also run. Would recommend them.

Brand new, this might not be an issue but the door hinges are made of cheese. Clicky clacky type fkers. The walls and roofs are paper thin and dent super easy.

I have a 125 somthing or other L3 and it must have the flattest torque curve in the world. The powerband is tiny and you are constantly shuffling gears.

Ive had Transits for the last 10years, this might be my last for a while.

We had to get extra dead locks fitted to our Transits after they kept having the factory locks twisted and tools stolen.

Then there was an issue with back doors being opened via a loom that is exposed in the hinge area.

They also had lots of recalls, cel‘s and other niggly faults which took forever to resolve.

You’d wait 6 weeks for a courtesy van to be available and then when the guys dropped their vans off there was no courtesy van!

The T6’s can have egr and dpf problems, but my local dealer is really good and usually gets them back on the road asap and the drivers always get a courtesy vehicle of some kind, sometimes an Amarok and one guy even got a California for a week.

We’ve got an old Vito, rusty as hell, battered to death, 200k+ miles and with £500 of annual welding it keeps getting through the mot.
Also got a Sprinter, same as the above really, it’s had a second hand engine, it’s an old battle bus but old vans are simple to work on and easy to get cheap spares for.

Mines been in the garage today. Back all sorted. Needed rear pads, but can’t complaint at 99,965 miles from the first set.

New shape auto sprinter's seem reliable enough build quality is questionable windows switches fail due to getting wet or vibration from slamming the doors you can't close them gently or badly designed interior door handles that fail due to the plastic pin inside

The window switches in the Merc's are the one weakness we've found in the latest batch - all covered under warranty but a pain as they sometimes imobilise the vehicle.
Still the best van bar none for cost per mile operating and uptime.

had a sprinter 316 auto on hire the last few days, by christ have they went downhill in quality, the dash is horrible, really bad for wind noise through both doors, handling isnt a patch on the man, stereo sound is terrible, handsfree is too quiet, and having 2 mouse touchpad on the steering wheel is an awkward UI.
really torn as to what to do now whether I keep the man and accept the unreliability and try to find a better dealer, speaking to mechanics has put me off the transits a bit, snapped cranks, injector problems, problems with the wet belt, big target for theft, easy to steal and easy to get to the tools. I really like the look of them though, but I dont know if 130ps would leave me always wanting more.

I agree the stereo is a downgrade on the last models & it interference of muting or reducing the volume when you reverse or move off is a pain

I work as a mobile fleet service tech, 95% of the vehicles being vans that I work on I do agree that they are now all rubbish!
In my opinion the crafter/tge is the best of the bunch of large vans and I have a crafter turning up next week to replace my ageing transit custom!

I wouldn't reccomend the Transits now, as you know they suffer from some quite major problems and generally quite long wait times for repairs as all the dealers are stacked out with them already!

Sprinters have good engines still, shame what they've done to the interior. Personally I find the Peogeot/Citroen/Renault/Fiats just nasty to drive and sit in.

First one, 2018 model, fuel gauge fault that took 5 visits to fix, popped crank seal and pissed oil over a customers drive, several valve lifters failed, numerous visits and a looooong delay for parts, then fault lights, then shortly after they had the head off it it leaked high pressure diesel onto the turbos and caught fire on the driveway of a customers house who had just bought the house and hadnt moved in yet. luckily we all were on the ball and got it out but if the house went up i was looking at a 7 figure insurance claim. The customer had a good sense of humour though, and he has a bit of clout with man as he has a lot of their trucks. I kicked off big time to the point where the service manager was phoning the police on me because I wasnt handing the demonstrator back until they sorted me out, they expected me to have no van and watch my business collapse.
they gave me a new van in september 2019 on collection both passenger side doors were misaligned and making wind noise. Mentioned on collection that I would get them to fix it later as I had lost enough productive time already ,and I started using a different main dealer.

In december 2019 the tail lights would fail intermittantly and after 3 visits of the fault reoccuring in minutes I ended up tracing the fault by myself to a incorrectly assembled wiring loom with the plastic copex protector fitted 6 inches away from the sharp edge the wiring passed through so the wiring was chafing and shorting to ground. I had asked for the doors to be religned, no fault found.

febuary 2020 notice back door rusting from inside out, but they dont want to replace it, only repaint, but to get a colour match they want to paint both doors and round the quarters and I am not convinced about the longevity of resprayed panels.
side door still nff

radio crashes all the fking time

June 2020 first service, radio firmware update, still crashes but nor as much now dealer still saying doors nff and I am too busy to chase them over it, work is busy as hell and cant spare any time.

October 2020, lost power steering, gearchanges jerky, no abs, no stability control, no parking sensors, no cameras, no cruise, no hill hold, no brake assist wipers only work on max or inteemittant, no normal and the dash is lit up like a christmas tree
1st attempt need to order parts but its safe to drive so you cant get a loaner
2nd attempt, oh we ordered the right part but the wrong part arrived in the right parts bag 3rd visit, oh it wasnt that part but its safe to drive take it away you cant get a loaner by this time I had no power steering and defective braking systems for 12 days so I called my insurance company to ask and they confirmed that if I knowingly continued to drive like that they wouldnt cover me,
service manager wont answer his phone to anyone at weekend. still no loaner.
Monday rolls around, finally they agree I shouldnt be driving it but they wont arrange a loaner for me, I have to hire one myself, max £60 a day, max 3 days.
anyone who has had to hire a van this month will become aware of the covid tax and brexit tax and that most places have very few vans at the moment so have tripled the prices.
I had to go to a truck hire place who luckily had 1 van but they dont supply insurance, and my own insurers wouldnt cover a van I had no insurable interest in and cuvva dont do commercials over £20k so I had to pay £30 a day temp insurance.
problem was wheel bearing collapsed internally at 21k miles. they finally admitted the doors were misaligned but tried to say it was my fault I must have shut them on something. they had the van 2 days, total 14 days where I shouldn't really have been driving it.

I love the van, great handling, comfy ride, adaptive cruise, dab and great sound system, heated seats, 360 sensors and great camera system, self parking, upgraded comfort plus seats, interior is my favourite of all the commercials, but the reliability takes the shine off and the aftersales make me want to open someone up with a stanley knife.

One part of me thinks downgrade to a top spec transit but my head says no.
One part of me thinks stick it out and try the fife dealer.
One part of me thinks just fk the dealer network, remap it and just maintain it myself, It isnt worth the headache dealing with morons and it will finally be the van its meant to be, you can tell it is held back by an emissions detune, been in a remapped one and it is a very different beast, I went from a tuned vito 120 to this and the power is my main regret.

I am also pissed off because my racking is homemade, and it is a hell of a lot of effort to swap it from one van to another, dont fancy rebuilding it for a few years, but also every time I have to decant from my van into a hired van I can only fit around a third of my stuff, as hired vans are never racked and I make full use of the height.
