What happened to HGV drivers having manners?
Discussion
I remember a time when if you flashed a truck to pull out, or moved into the next lane to make a space for him you’d get a thank you.
Whether it was a wave as you passed, or a flash when you pull back in, most acknowledged what you’d done.
Now, it’s almost none existent.
So if you drive a class 1, try and say thank you 🙏

It's not a lorry driver thing, roads are more crowded, traffic flow impeded by roadworks the end result of which is often not an improvement, etc etc, all of which makes driving more stressful and reduces courtesy to and from all types of driver.
FWIW, I drove from London to Chester last Friday, and I noticed more courteous behavior from all types of vehicles on the M40 than usual - I am sure it was the result of less traffic due to lockdown.

But I’ve given up on general populous driving with manners a decade or so ago.
Truck drivers were the last bastion.
Now as bad as everyone else.
I’m fairly new to the HGV world. Less than 2 years Class 1. I’ve got a fairly varied and interesting driving history and experience prior to the HGV thing. I try to be as courteous, polite, safe and by the book as I can be.I’m always trying to improve myself. I drive a twilight shift. Same route for 4 nights per week, I’m usually parked back at our yard at 01:30. The amount of night drivers who are a liability came as quite a shock. I think I was expecting more( professional driver, higher standard of recurrent training blah blah) But they’re just the same as any other group of road users. A small percentage are excellent, a small percentage are absolutely shocking, and most are just average. However the bad really stand out. Poor lane discipline, no planning for overtakes or concept of how much they have in reserve for a manoeuvre. Just a simple lack of 3rd party anticipation and poor observation to boot. Truck drivers were the last bastion.
Now as bad as everyone else.

Dry your eyes and move on.Whether it was a wave as you passed, or a flash when you pull back in, most acknowledged what you’d done.

I came off the roads nearly 4 years ago due to health , while the standard of many car and van drivers had already dropped the average trucker was still pretty courteous and looked out for others on the road . All the trucking forums have lots of comments about the decline in standards of truck driving but still observe that the rest of Europe is far better than the UK and much more pleasant for truckers apart from the problem with illegal immigrants and stowaways , not just at the channel crossing points but all over Europe.

Iv only been driving hgvs 7 years and it’s worse than it was, seems little camaraderie more recently, trucks don’t flash you back in after overtakes, you move over to let them join motorways easy and they match your speed and leave you stranded in lane 2, rushing about every were cutting you up last minute or using wrong lanes at roundabouts to skip ahead etc lots of knobheads around a present Iv gone onto to nights to avoid most of it and it’s much more relaxing and seems more truckers helping each other out at night. I don't move over for them anymore. As I've been hung out to dry so many times, I just won't put myself in to a position where it can happen. LetsTryAgain said:
