Who has been interested in truck driving lessons? I've found a one school, can you help me - what other good schools you know?

I learnt with Teesside Transport Training, they were ok. Incredibly bigoted instructor who didn't tell you much about why you should do certain things, but was belligerent which gets the job done. I and my colleague passed first time after a weeks intensive course (category C)

They've got a new truck since I learnt which looks nice

The newbies section of trucknetuk might be a better place to ask.

Where are you? In my experience the “one man band” type guys are better than the chain type schools but experiences may vary.

Make sure you book with someone who actually has the vehicles and not a call centre. Smaller local firms probably a better bet.

This.

Out of interest, does anyone know an approx. cost to go from car to LGV 1 these days?

From memory I paid £595, cough, it was a while back.

I did mine in March 93 and was circa £800 iirc. I've still got one of the orange tin HGV L plates that were required at the time (I double manned across Europe as a learner and we needed proper plates).

Much more complex now hence some charlatans ripping people off via call centres and farming the training out to schools and skimming a margin. 3-4k ought to get a C+E provided you choose the right outfit.

Did those Pounds have forty shillings in them?

I wouldn’t even bother.
Having got my Class 1 in the last 12 months, I can’t find any weekend work.
Complete waste of money.

Obviously, you can get a full time job, but not many are willing to take anyone on without experience.
And if no one will take you on, how do you get experience?

I have to take my Class C (Old Class 2) and I'm considering C+E for any circumstances when I want to tow a trailer.

I was just booking it all when Covid hit. This is the process if anyone else is interested.
This is assuming you have C1 already.
1. Medical (if over 45, medical every 5 years).
2. Apply for Provisional C & C+E (I put C+E on because it's free and if I don't do it, it doesn't matter)
If you passed your test prior to 1998 then you need to do
3. Theory Test (HGV)
4. Hazard Perception Test
5. Book your Class C lessons - I'm going with a local instructor. Own trucks. £1231+vat +test fee. 4 days instruction, test on the fifth.

NB you can no longer go straight to C+E (Old Class 1). You have to do at least C class (possibly C1 if you only have to 3500kg).

You haven't been able to go straight to C+E and we haven't had Class 1, 2 & 3 HGV licences for three decades!

I passed my multi choice, hazard perception and CPC case studies today.
Because of Covid there was no waiting around for the allotted time, finish 1, straight back in for the next. Had all 3 finished and out the door in about 90 minutes.
Looking to book my C class training/test tomorrow.

You go straight to C and youll get a C1 too when you pass. If you already have C1 youll get a 2nd C1 to go with it, which expires for medical with your C.

I think I paid the same, 2 weeks after my car test.

I actually just got my C+E back even though it expired due to medical in 2018 but DVLA just gave me a year to sort the medical.

Not been used in 20 years but you never know what the future holds now.

£32 for a digi tacho card what happened to the old paper disc wink

And driver CPC needs to be done as well. Sounds like fun grrrr.

Are you sure? The extension would be for current expiring licenses, surely; and not those already expired? That will require a D4 medical and a wait of several weeks whijst the DVLA slowly deal with it.

I was surprised as well but I did get my MP involved and the Doctors (No medical available due to Covid but I my health is fine and I had an eye test last year for screen time not for driving)., if that had any bearing on it then fine.

But I have the new one in my pocket and the old in the drawer.

Old Licence valid 2013 to 2018 new one without a medical 2020 to 2021 happy to photocopy both old and new for anyone if you want.

PM me if you wish I will scan them in for you
