Looking for a tough and reliable pickup - probably either new or nearly new for a relative who is a farmer. Will need to regularly tow 2.5t and will obviously lead a hard life. He doesn’t want a Navarra as I think he’s blown a couple of engines on the last ones they had. Also X-Class is out because of crap Merc customer service; and it’s a rebadged Nissan.
Are Toyota Hi-lux really the go to option - anyone got experience of running one? Or Mitsubishi L-200?

Toyota Landcruiser 70 V8 diesel.
None of the pickups here are built to any standard, they’re all pretty much sensor laden warranty liabilities.
Oh hang in, perhaps the Great Wall Steed....

I know several tree surgeons who have Ford Rangers and wouldnt use anything else, although not farming they still get heavily abused and seem to not break

I have recently bought a 2010 Hilux for my tree surgery business and it is superb. It has 120k on the clock but is so solid and well made. It is also refreshingly tech free, so very little to go wrong. It is actually nice to drive, will sit on the motorway at 70 in complete comfort and is actually quite a nice place to be. I would definitely buy another one.

D-max is well regarded by the farmers that moved away from Defenders.

Izuzu is the weapon of choice around here. Auto favoured more for towing as first gear is quite high geared in the manual.
